#AnEventApart

“I hadn’t publicly addressed the endings of these businesses, so I figured it was time to do so.”

Jeffrey’s reflections on A List Apart, A Book Apart, and An Event Apart are touching. All three of those endeavors influenced my career, and I’m beyond grateful. It’s sad that it came at a personal cost to him and his partners.

One of the things that really struck me watching it was being reminded of a talk about, of all things, accessibility and web design by @Meyerweb at #AnEventApart many years ago.

Eric was talking within the context of navigating a hospital website in the midst of a family medical emergency and how designers often misjudge how a user's attention flows - especially in his case on what was an awful day.

Watching the #Wendover video made me think about the connections between how our attention works and how large masses of people behave - and how much design, be it pixels on a screen, or a bridge providing transit for a religious pilgrimage, often have seemingly similar challenges.

Looking for US WEB CONFERENCES.

It seems US conferences had a harder time recovering from Covid than the European ones, and the demise of #anEventApart was definitely a big bummer, but I'd like to know which ones are left.

So please let me know about good conferences about web development, in general or with a more specific topic, in the US - preferably ones with a national rather than local reach.

(Though I guess I'm not terribly interested in React or other frameworks - sorry.)

Thank you, An Event Apart.

I have so many fond memories of #aneventapart that I found it difficult to write about what AEA has meant to me.

Here’s my love letter to the conference that changed our industry and touched my life.

Some Things I Took Away From An Event Apart 2022 in Denver css-tricks.com/some-things-i-t Things I Took Away From An Event Apart 2022 in Denver"

An Event Apart 2022 Denver wrapped up yesterday. And while I was unable to make it to all three days this time, I did catch yesterday’s action — and it was awesome. I’m not very social or outgoing, but this was the first conference I’ve been to in at least a couple of years, and […]

Really curious about what fills the gap of #aneventapart in 2023 (and moving forward). Top tier speakers, attendee focused experience, never been to a conference that seemed like such a perfect match.

Dear my old nerds: If you’re like me, you’d JUMP at the chance to buy lunch for Jeffrey Zeldman. How much of our success do we owe to Zeldman?

Here’s a chance to do something much more meaningful for him.

@Meyerweb @zeldman Many thanks to Eric, Jeffery, the AEA team, and all the speakers who made #AnEventApart such a terrific conference. I attended several AEA Boston events in the early years and followed subsequent events online when travel wasn't possible. #AEA always had a great combination of foundational and cutting edge speakers and I always learned a LOT! I hope #AListApart and #ABookApart will continue and that you you will keep your #AnEventApart videos posted. Thanks for everything!

comes to an end after 17 years. Thank you to @Meyerweb, @zeldman, Toby, and every speaker who shared their knowledge with us over the years.

I am eternally graceful to have had the privilege of speaking from the An Event Apart stage, two times virtual, and just two weeks ago in person at what was to become the last ever.

Holy crap: aneventapart.com/

I’m so grateful I was able to attend one of these (DC in 2018). Single best conference I’ve ever attended, and I was able to meet and mingle with some longtime web heroes. I still have the presentation decks and refer to some of the talks these years later.

My first and last #AnEventApart was 9 years ago, when somehow I convinced my manager that a colleague and I should fly from Amsterdam to San Francisco to attend the conference. The whole SF experience was awesome and it was one of the best conferences I’ve attended. RIP An Event Apart, you will be missed 👋.

Sad to hear about #AnEventApart coming to an end. AEA had such an impact on my life. I'm honored to have been a part of it the last few years and I'm going to miss it.

Congratulations to the entire #AnEventApart crew on seventeen years of blockbuster conferences. I’m grateful for the times I was able to attend here in DC and appreciate how well-curated and tightly-run each event was.

@Meyerweb @Meyerweb I don’t think I can fully articulate how much #aneventapart means to me personally and professionally. The things I’ve learned and the people I’ve met there have been a huge part of my life and career. I was really looking forward to seeing you all again in #seattle next year but it seems like that is not meant to be. Thank you to you, @zeldman, Marcie, Toby, the speakers, and everyone else who put on a great conference.

I attended in Austin in 2013. It was the first tech conference I ever attended and remains, to this day, the most influential one. Every conference since I’ve measured against that one.
Strangely, the memories that remain in my head most from this event, are when @chriscoyier presented in his Guns N’ Roses shirt from the gift shop and when @adactio played an instrument on stage as part of his presentation.

“Seventeen years ago, in December 2005, we held our first conference in Philadelphia. The event we just held in San Francisco was our last. All things must come to an end, and this is ours.” aneventapart.com

@rachelandrew Oh no! They say "all good things must come to an end," but does that have to include this good thing? 😭
I've only attended once - Orlando 2016 - but it has forever impacted me. Just the other day, I referenced a talk from @adactio about Resilient Design.
#AnEventApart will be missed, but I am and will always be grateful for it. Thankful for the community this has fostered 🙏🏾

The times I spent at #AnEventApart were formative for me--I learned so much and met so many interesting people. Had ideas in the back of my head about going again next year.

Alas, not to be. The last conference this year was their last.

Thanks so much for making the web a better place.

Just broke the news to my kid who has accompanied me on a couple of the trips and more than once has said they wanted to attend #aneventapart with me again. They’re bummed.

I think they may have secretly thought that some day they would be on stage like all of the speakers they met. What great role models for them to meet and content to see during some formative years. Another thing to be grateful for.
