#AndeanBackstrap

2025-05-09

Started on Saturday afternoon. Wove again today to finish. Another run at four selvedges, and this one was a bit easier. Gotta keep practicing. #AndeanBackstrap #KeepWeaving #AlwaysAStudent

Finished this four selvedge Tanka Ch'oro this evening. Needle weaving the gap is still REALLY hard to do. #FourSelvedge #AndeanBackstrap #KeepLearning #AlwaysAStudent

Collage of four photos: Two embroidery needles holding open the two sheds. Needles and heddles removed with just a few rows left to weave. The finished band in my hand. And the finished whole band pinned on a towel to see the full length.

I decided "well, since I am not still a five year old, then I guess I know how I have to finish this Tanka Ch'oro" #IYKYK #FourSelvedges #AndeanBackstrap #KeepWeaving #AlwaysAStudent

A narrow woven band has an X pattern in purple close to the camera. Two shed sticks are balanced in the weaving. A bundle of blue threads and a loop of yellow yarn are stationed in the unwoven warp threads. And at the far end, the patterned X and O in purple and yellow receed away to the anchor point.

I declared (in a small group) that I would challenge myself to weave AT LEAST ONCE this week. Evidence of success: I've set up the living room again to make it easy to weave again during after dinner TV time. #KeepLearning #ForeverStudent #HandMade #HandWoven #AndeanBackstrap

Woven band shows outside borders in solid stripes (burgundy, light blue, dark blue, and dark green) and inner pattern in red and yellow, with reflected and mirrored and flipped curled shapes. There is a weaving stick holding open the next row for the weft thread. The base of the weaving is safety pinned on a small dowel which is looped into a yarn belt.

🧵 My #Weaving Journey: (continued) I rarely use "stories" features on platforms, but I did enjoy seeing that almost five years ago (in Dec 2018), I was posting more fun photos of my bulky yarn demo preparation for #AndeanBackstrap weaving samplers.

These are ATYPICAL weaving demo bundles, designed to be easy to see from a distance. I made these in 2018, with no forewarning that they would be useful on Zoom in lockdown. #foreshadowing

photo collage captioned: I had an hour at home between appts today, so I took out a loom to measure warps with my "Duplo block sized" yarns I made. Successfully measured one three-pairs and one four-pairs band. Realized I also need weft yarn. #crafty #textiles #Andean #Backstrap #Weaving

top photo includes stripes of warp yarns wrapped around dowel rods of an inkle loom (on its side) and three balls of yarn.
bottom collage of three images shows: (left) close up of the cross where threads overlap in a figure-eight center, (center) the full warp off the dowels and coiled up on a pillow, and (right) close up of the yarns organized on one end of the loom while being measured.overhead photo captioned at the bottom: One skein of red for the "listas" (the selvedges) in these bands makes 5 total bands. Two pairs of red on the left and right of each band. The red ran out, but there's still some blue and yellow left. Three 3-pairs, one 4-pairs, and one 6-pairs. #crafty #textiles #Andean #Backstrap #Weaving

🧵 My #Weaving Journey: (continued) While I had only completed two narrow woven bands up to this point, I was committed to my "MAKE SOMETHING BIG ENOUGH TO SEE" idea.

And so my "Duplo Blocks" demo band was born (for weavers that need to be able to see what I'm demonstrating) and this is "Lifetime Band #03" -- wildly off the "normal" learning path (finished in Dec 2018, still in use)

collage of three photos: Woven band about 2.5" or 6.5/7cm wide, made of bulky wool yarn

(1) on the left, a woven band is stretched out so that the horizontal stripes in blue and yellow (banded by dark red vertical outer edges) are followed by a pattern that looks like a large yellow X followed by a large blue O (the O has a top and bottom tail, also like a top or a dreidel)

(2) top right; example of the weaving process paused and tied off to a table. the band is anchored and tied to a clamp on the far side of the table, and two wooden sticks are fed through sheds of unwoven warp

(3) bottom right: a hand holds out the beginning horizontal stripes section

🧵 My #Weaving Journey: In 2018, I enrolled to study again with @abbysyarns

After children learn to weave on 3-pairs, they move to key traditional patterns on 4-pairs to learn more principles.

I left this 2nd course convinced: (a) THIS was my weaving obsession, (b) I needed more beginning weaving friends so we could have a proper intermediate class, and (c) I should memorize the #Quechua terms.

collage with five photos, captioned "Lifetime Band #02". 3 top photos and 2 bottom photos, showing different designs woven on center pattern threads of green and yellow, with dark red vertical stripes on the outside edges, dotted with white threads peeking out where the weft moves horizontally left and right. Shapes in the pattern sections vary between stylized S and Z figures with curled ends, diagonals running left then right, alternating with circles/eyes under the wide spaces of the diagonals (like a window in a hill), and stylized S/Z shapes with two diagonals in the center columns.

🧵 My #Weaving Journey: The first time I learned about #AndeanBackstrap weaving was in 2017 at an in-person 3-day intensive with @abbysyarns (long before #FranquemontUniversity )

We started where all beginning weavers start in the Andes: On what is described as 3-pairs and with Tanka Ch'oro

We're also introduced to the notion of variations and weaving from memory #NoCharts and body mechanics for weaving.

collage of four photos weaving a narrow wool band. Top left: horizontal stripes alternating green and yellow, with dark red outside-edge vertical stripes (with white dots peeking out of the edges). Top right: an X and O alternating pattern starts. Bottom left: after the X and O, the shape morphs into diagonal tadpoles, where the tails point toward each other. Bottom right: two squared 8s touch each other, one in green, one in yellow. The band also shows the scale of weaving, since the band is slightly narrower than the width of my fingers.

🧵 My #Weaving Journey (rebooted): I rarely get to see my 1st and 2nd woven Andean bands next to each other (1: Left, 2: Right). This photo from 08-Dec-2018 shows where I started.

The bands were woven using a thick cotton mini (weft), which I think makes adorable white selvedge polka dots, like beads. ❤️

The yarn is what I call my "duplo" khaitu (bulky wool high-twist 2-ply) for easy-to-see demos. 🙂

#FranquemontUniversity #AndeanBackstrap #BackstrapWeaving #Memorized #AlwaysLearning

Three large balls of wool yarn (in mustard yellow, blue, and red). Between and the yarn is a single empty wooden spindle. On top, two patterned woven narrow bands -- each is dark red on the outer edges, green and yellow figures running down the centers, and white cotton polka dots on the outside edges (similar to white beads appearing on the edges)

@SueRM lovely! I've never tried #AndeanBackstrap. This looks like another fun rabbit hole to disappear into, and much more portable than #rigidheddleweaving
