Cross-Post: Pylos and Sphacteria 2027

The next major ancient reenactment in Greece will take place at Gialova, New Pylos, and Sphacteria from 19 to 25 April 2027. This will focus on the Athenian and Spartan struggle to control the area during the Peloponnesian War or Archidamian War. More than a hundred members of groups from all over Europe, the USA, and Canada will attend. This part of the Peloponnese is not good for much except light grazing and summer holidays, so it is an unspoiled rural site. There will be excursions to Olympia, Ancient Pylos, and the Mycenaean Palace of Nestor and perhaps other sites.

A lot of organization happens on Facebook. But this year there is a website and an intermittent email list with links to Google Docs for organizing. Tentative discussions on topics like flying spears to the site, and splitting up the load and expense of cooking gear and water vessels, are ongoing. Discussions about experiments and rules for mock fighting will come in time. Jetzt am WE endlich wieder "Puls" zubereitet... Diesmal mit Berglinsen, roten Linsen, gelben und organgenen Karotten, Lauch und gemischtem Hack.
Das Hack ist zwar absolut un-römisch, doch die alten Römer waren pragmatisch veranlagt, und dank des Hacks sinkt die Zubereitungszeit deutlich (alternativ müsste das Fleisch anderthalb Stunden gekocht werden). Schmecken tut es obendrein genauso wie mit Fleischstücken.

Het probleem met het verleden is het heden. Onze belangstelling verschuift. Momenteel staan klimaat en onvrije arbeid in de belangstelling, hiervóór was vrouwengeschiedenis populair en in de jaren zeventig stonden wereldgeschiedenis en globalisering centraal. Elke generatie heeft nieuwe zorgen, elke generatie stelt nieuwe vragen, elke generatie herschrijft geschiedenisboeken. De aangepaste canons zijn een voorbeeld. Dit is de dagdagelijkse geschiedvorsing.

Presentisme

Tegelijk – en dit is wezenlijker – verandert ons denken over de relaties tussen verleden, heden en toekomst. Hierover heeft de Franse historicus François Hartog behartenswaardige dingen geschreven. Ooit meenden we dat we in het heden lessen konden leren van het verleden, waardoor we beter voorbereid zouden zijn op de toekomst. Als het gaat om de tijd voor pakweg het jaar 1000, is dit echter kentheoretisch onmogelijk, aangezien we onvoldoende informatie hebben. Je kunt bezwaarlijk onrobuuste data gebruiken om een samenleving tjokvol robuuste data te adviseren.

In de negentiende eeuw ontstond een tweede visie op de verhouding tussen toen, nu en straks: utopisme. Het verleden en heden werden onderschikt gemaakt aan de toekomst. Ik hoef niet uit te leggen hoe het heden eruit ziet in een samenleving die zich richt op een communistisch of fascistisch ideaal. Evenmin hoef ik uit te leggen hoe de bestudering van het verleden daardoor wordt ingeperkt.

Onze eenentwintigste eeuw ziet naast deze twee soorten relatie tussen verleden, heden en toekomst een derde soort, die Hartog aanduidt als presentisme. Momenteel zijn verleden noch toekomst maatgevend; alles draait om toepasbaarheid in het heden. Het verleden is belangrijk als we er meteen iets mee kunnen. Denk aan de archeologie, die financieel is ingekaderd in de ruimtelijke ordening, denk aan herdenkingen, aan historische excuses en denk – opnieuw – aan aangepaste canons, historisch of literair of anders.

Beleefbaarheid

U heeft de kop van dit blogje gezien en vraagt zich inmiddels af wat deze lange inleiding te maken met het vorige week heropende Museum Dorestad, dat is gewijd aan een van de belangrijkste opgravingen in Europa. Voor ik daarover meer vertel, zult u me echter een tweede inleiding moeten toestaan.

Een van de uitingen van presentisme is de nadruk op de beleefbaarheid van de geschiedenis: de ervaring van het verleden op dit eigenste moment, zoals in een toegankelijk gemaakt kasteel, zoals door re-enactors die in uniform uitleg geven, zoals in workshops historisch koken. In beleidsnota’s lezen we over “erfgoedtoerisme” en “erfgoedparticipatie” als strategieën om te voldoen aan de behoefte aan contact met het verleden.

Er is niets mis met beleefbaarheid, al wil het nog weleens leiden tot nep-verleden, zoals het nagebouwde Romeinse fort in Leiden. Presentisme heeft hier voorrang gekregen boven de confrontatie met een verleden dat wezenlijk anders was, dat schuurt met het heden en dat, voor wie er de dialoog mee aan gaat, helpt om het plaats- en tijdgebondene te zien van eigentijdse ideeën.

Ik noemde het nagebouwde fort omdat het Romeinse verleden vrij eenvoudig beleefbaar valt te maken. De Romeinen bouwden stevig, monumentaal, groot. In Archeon is bijvoorbeeld een herberg nagebouwd die het uitstekend doet als moderne horecagelegenheid; in Xanten documenteren reconstructies zelfs een complete stad. Een ander voordeel van het Romeinse verleden is dat de bouwvormen sinds de Renaissance opnieuw zijn gebruikt en daardoor voor iedereen herkenbaar zijn. Het Romeinse verleden sluit tot slot goed aan bij de hedendaagse groei van een pan-Europese identiteit. Er zijn Romeinse resten in eenentwintig van de zevenentwintig lidstaten van de Europese Unie; de Romeinse rijksgrens (limes) slingert door tien EU-landen. De Commissie Van Oostrom heeft de Romeinse limes in 2007 gecanoniseerd en die keuze overleefde in 2020 de Herzieningscommissie Kennedy.

La Commune (Paris, 1871) is a 2000 French docudrama directed by Peter Watkins. It tells the story of the Paris Commune, a French revolutionary government that seized power in Paris on 18 March 1871 after the defeat of Napoleon III during the Franco-Prussian War. The Commune only lasted for over two months before being defeated by the forces of Third Republic on 28 May.

"Watkins and his collaborators involved over 220 people from Paris and its suburbs in the making of the film. According to him, about 60% of them had never acted before. It was a process that required them to delve into the history of the Paris Commune and then express their feelings about it on camera—what the viewer sees is a natural extension of their interests and insights into the historical event. Watkins’s decision to cast French-Algerian “foreign aliens” in La Commune informs the connections the film makes between the plight of the Communards and the anti-colonial Mokrani Revolt that started that same year in Algeria—revolutionaries from both uprisings later ended up in the same labor camps in New Caledonia."
