Getting into #archery and realising that because the USA dominates the market for modern archery equipment I'm going to need stupid units "hex wrenches".
I've already got a nice set of Allen keys but because I live in a less stupid country they're all metric.

Welp, I've signed myself and the kid up as members of the Sydney Olympic Park Archers club. Now we need to get ourselves equipped.
While it's generally recommended to go to a physical store for advice and fitting with your first bow the club membership admin (who's also a coach) gave us a tip about an online bundle that he thought was good quality, and includes almost everything we'll need for the near future.
This would also enable us to meet the kid's very important requirement that they have a red bow and I have a blue one.

Back at the #archery range to train for the first time since February. The shoulder feels pretty much okay, but I decided to ease into it, so I borrowed one of the club's 18 lb barebows (i.e. a modern recurve but without sight and weights) and shot at 20 m.
Took a fair few rounds to relax and get my eye in (not used to recurve and drawing under the arrow) but managed a decent gathering towards the end.
Will try longbow next week and see how it feels.
Back pocket quiver. I like it!
Been a couple of weeks since I last shot. Focusing on me rather than the bow setup now. #Archery #RecurveArchery #Archer
The kid and I did our third and final "Silver Arrow" session today, and received a card certifying that we are probably not a danger to ourselves and others (with that card we are allowed to do casual archery sessions by ourselves at the archery centre, or other archery clubs).
This puts us at a crossroads. We can
(a) Stop doing archery.
(b) Do casual archery sessions at the Archery Centre on Sundays, if and when they have availability.
(c) Join the Sydney Olympic Park Archers club instead, and get coaching with them.
We're currently leaning towards (c). The problem with (b) is that the Archery Centre has very limited slots for casual archery so it often books out weeks in advance, so we'd probably struggle to go even once a week. Combine that infrequent practice with an absence of coaching and we'd be unlikely to make any progress, and would get bored and give up as a result.
Going with (c) does require making a commitment. The club annual membership fees are about the same cost as 10 casual sessions at the centre, but for that you get to shoot casually any time you want for a year, plus you get 10 free beginners' coaching sessions. More significant is that to shoot at the club you need all your own equipment, which could easily end up around $1k each.
Broken arrows makes for pretty good plant supports.
Huh an archer who had never heard of Edward S. Morse also thought of Morse's primary release as "what kids do if you give them a bow and arrow and let them play." That was Morse's observation in 1885 too, but then he realized that some peoples don't know any other way to shoot and not everyone uses a thumb draw or a three-fingers-on-the-string draw. #archery

Archery last night was interesting. Lots of friendly people shooting. I shot pretty well on the whole. One bad end but thats ok.
I spent quite a lot of time shooting with one of our junior members. He has ADHD and his parents encourage him to shoot to help calm him and slow him down. He wasn't having a good time really but I hope I helped.

Dann doch lieber Holzreste zusammen lesen
