So… ? Riddle me this. I took my for an outing as usual on Sunday and scored a PB of over 400 for a Western round(48 at 60 and 48 at 50). Took the same bow out today and barely scraped 200 for the same round. The only difference was that I used some cheap arrows on Sunday and the expensive custom made arrows matched to the bow today. Oh, and today was bright and cold but Sunday was cloudy.

Happy New Year everyone.

Over on the Armour Archive I have been asking some open questions about the Arrows vs. Armour series on YouTube. The team never got around to writing up their evidence, their assumptions, and their results in a concise document and I think they come from an insular British community interested in just this specific aspect of archery who don't know what looks unusual to outsiders. forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB #archery 1/n

Managed to make this significantly better by taking a bunch of weight off my bow. So, immediate crisis averted, but I do prefer to have more mass weight on there so I’ll need to improve dampening somehow. #Archery

A good day’s shooting in the bitterly cold weather. A personal best for the Imperial Western Round with my trusty English and some new arrows.

Three things became clear rather quickly from today’s shoot. Firstly, my current stabilisers aren’t really up to the job at higher draw weights; the v-bar came loose multiple times during the shoot. Secondly, shooting in gusty wind and freezing cold is hard. Thirdly, Secondborn needs some warmer winter boots. #archery

My Archery club had a fun xmas "field" competition at our target range this morning. Basically shooting at different distances at field target faces pinned to target bosses.

Its was flipping cold in a stiff Northerly wind blowing into the archers faces as they shot.

It was certainly blowing the cobwebs away.

Off to a St Nicholas shoot with Secondborn. It’s colder than charity, but - incredibly for December - the sun is shining. Lots of layers, thermos of coffee, box of Christmas cookies, and apparently there will be (non-alcoholic) mulled wine too*.

(* unsurprisingly, alcohol and #archery do not mix.)

@aviancer Thanks.

Most archers seem to use 20-60x80 spotting scopes, but I came across a video by a former high level archer and current coach who said he almost never zoomed in beyond 25x. That gave me the idea that the 9-27x56 would be enough scope for the job, and it's so much smaller!

Adorable baby telescope! It even comes with a telescope onesie!

I finally got my hands on the spotting scope I ordered, an Svbony SV410 9-27x56 ED. This is mainly for archery, so that I can see where my arrows have hit. Together with the SmallRig Travel Video Tripod it makes for a very portable setup that should be easy to carry in my archery backpack when cycling to the range.

First impressions are good. The build quality feels solid and the images are sharp to the edge of the field, with no chromatic aberration that I could see.

Unfortunately with the holidays I probably won't get a chance to try it out at the archery club until the end of January, but I might try a bit of birding or astronomy with it.

Interesting to see that Bhutanese cultural/community archery has adopted compound bows, the most modern type.

Given that they shoot at a 30 cm target from 140 metres away that makes a lot of sense, though!

Why archery is a lifeline for Bhutanese migrants in Perth
By Bridget McArthur

Transitioning from "the happiest nation on earth" to a fast-paced Western society is not without its challenges for Perth's booming Bhutanese population, some of whom have taken up archery to improve their mental health.

A question for the recurve #Archery nerds of the Fedi hive mind, if I may:

I'm at the point where I need to upgrade my stabilisers. My current set is the Avalon Tec X one that everyone buys as their first set, and while they're a good first set they're just not able to provide enough damping now I've gone up in draw weight and bought more efficient limbs. What would be a meaningful but not insane upgrade from the Avalon? Quite like the look of the Wiawis ACS-EL series, but thoughts welcome!

During #archery training I witnessed break of bow riser (handle). Fortunately it proved that the bow is most stressed not when drawn but after the shot when limbs goes forward by theirs remaning kinetic energy (string is rigid). So bow went in front of our teacher, not to her face.
