In 518, however, the Eastern Emperor, Anastasius, died and Justin I succeeded to the throne in Constantinople. Justin was a rough and uneducated soldier who had the help of his brilliant young nephew, Justinian.
Justin suppressed the heresies that had flourished under Anastasius and moved to accept the Roman view on various disputed points. As a result, there was a slow warming of relations between Pope and Emperor, with Theodoric finding himself increasingly isolated.
Justin also initiated stringent anti-Arian policies that Theodoric found disturbing. In 525, Theodoric sent Pope John I to Constantinople to negotiate an easing of imperial bigotry. Once I learned that the barbarians who sacked Rome ending the mandate of the Western Roman Empire were not only Romanized, but also Arian Christians, my understanding of modern theology, Christology, hermeneutics, and exegesis evolved.
