Here's another of the 78's I bought in Glasgow many years ago, probably in the 1980s or early 90's, and probably in the #Barras market.

You'll notice that this record, like most at that time, was sold in the shop's own-brand sleeve. I've had fun trying to find the original locations. This one, Vics, was on the Gallowgate, "Opposite Meat Marker." That puts it in the block on the corner of G'gate and Abercromby St. That area is now all modern housing. Soulless!

Another of the 78's I picked up last century in (I think) the #Barras in #Glasgow. In the 1940's these records were packaged in sleeves advertising the shops that sold them.

This one was from Biggar's at 102 Saucheihall St. Biggar's was founded in 1867 and still exists! That's more than I can say for 102 Sauchiehall St, which I watched burn down on March 22., 2018.

Amongst other things, the sleeve says, "In our Fifteen Comfortable Audition Rooms will be found a Prompt.
Courteous and Intelligent Service, which renders the choosing of Records a Pleasant Experience."

Another 78 I bought in the #Barras (I think) many years ago in #Glasgow. Back in those days (probably the 1940's) shops put records in their own branded sleeves.

The original building Cuthbertsons was in is gone, but you can see it in this early 1950's photograph.

"Our audition rooms are specially equipped to facilitate the choosing of gramophones & records. Gramophones repaired, called for, and delivered."

A black and white scene of Sauchiehall St, Glasgow, in the 1950's. Cuthbertson's (established 1887) occupies the floor above a corsetiere Central Cafe, and a billiard hall. To the far side is a C&A store. The pavements are crowded with pedestrians, and there are a few cas parked on the street. The corner of a double-decker bus is just visible.

Having established the shop around 65 years earlier, the owners of Cuthbertsons must have assumed they would be around forever. Even C&A, which was a clothing store everyone shopped in, no longer exists in the UK.
