We're hosting the February edition of The Session which takes place next Friday, on the 28th. This crept up on us a bit (work, life) but we'll share the topic tomorrow. Here's last month's round up to give you an idea of how it works:

Happy Boxing Day!! The greatest national holiday ever because you have to do not one stinkin' thing. What a great idea. Who ever thought "let's have another day off" needs to have a line up at his grave side with folk thanking him. That the truth. For more dubious claims to the truth, here's the beery news notes... abetterbeerblog427.com/2024/12 #BeerWriting #Beer

My latest article for the local paper talks about #Kernza, a newish, processed grain derived from a perennial intermediate wheatgrass, and its use in brewing — specifically, in two new beers from #DeschutesBrewery, Kernza Lager and #NonAlcoholic Kernza Golden Brew. For the article I focused on the non-alcoholic brew, the first certified organic NA #beer in the country.

My latest article for the local paper this week covers the birthday weekend of Bend’s #McMenamins Old St. Francis School — the location is celebrating both the 88th birthday of the St. Francis School property itself, and the 20th anniversary of McMenamins opening.

BLOG POST: Prompted by something Matthew Curtis wrote, some thoughts about why there aren't more beer critics. (A different question to why beer writers don't write more negative reviews.)

While #Oktoberfest in Munich is over, many breweries are still celebrating all month long and many Oktoberfest beers are currently available. My recent article for the local paper covers the two beer styles associated with the festival, #Märzen and #Festbier, with examples from #WildRideBrewing and #SunriverBrewing.

Thursday. Not quite the weekend but well past hump day. No extra chores yet but ripe with anticipation. Maybe your payday. Maybe you get yourself a bit of a treat later. Here’s the news. #Beer #BeerWriting abetterbeerblog427.com/2024/10

My latest print article for the local paper (published last week) is my annual #FreshHop roundup—or rather, because there are so many fresh hop beers being released and I have limited space in the article, a look at a handful of fresh hop beers to get an idea of what to expect this season.

Fresh is Best Fresh Hop IPA from Crux Fermentation Project of Bend, Oregon. It's a fresh hop beer in an attractive black and green can, poured into a half-measure glass with "Fresh Hop Ale Festival" etched on it, because it was the tasting glass from the Fresh Hop Ale Festival I attended in 2019 in Yakima, Washington.A can of Fresh 1 Trillion Fresh Hop West Coast IPA from Boss Rambler Beer Company of Bend, Oregon. It's poured into my "Fresh Hops on the Pond" glass from a past fresh hop beer fest. The Boss Rambler can is pale powder blue with an older style pickup truck arranged vertically on it, and while you'd expect a fresh hop beer with a truck on the label to show bales of hops in the pickup bed, it actually appears empty.A glass and can of Fresh Hop Vicious Mosquito IPA from Sunriver Brewing of Sunriver, Oregon. The glossy black and red label is stylized, simple, and eye-catching, and the beer inside the can is one of my favorite fresh hop beers of the year so far. Fresh Hop Vicious is one of my gold standard fresh hop beers by which I compare all others and I highly recommend it if you can find it.

My latest print article for the local paper, published last week, revisits the styles of #shandy and #radler, which I last wrote about for the paper way back in 2017. Both #DeschutesBrewery and #WorthyBrewing released examples of these this summer, which I tried and reviewed.

Anytime Lemonade Shandy from Deschutes Brewery. It seems like not many beers are released in bottles any more, but this one is (it's also in cans), and it's a nicely simple label with a lemon on it. The liquid inside is poured into a glass and it's a glowing yellow with ample carbonation.A pint of Adult Lemonade Radler from Worthy Brewing of Bend, Oregon. The logo on the pint glass is well worn and slightly rubbed off. The beer in the glass is a brassy yellow color. The glass sits on a picnic table in the brewery's beer garden, and you can see a blurred background with the brewery's name in large letters on the side of the building.

For my mid-August article for the local paper, I profiled Velvet Wallpaper #IPA, the collaboration #beer from #DoubleMountainBrewery and #VanHenionBrewing. It’s a west coast style IPA and Double Mountain sent me a bottle to sample in conjunction with the release.

The first of my print articles for local paper in August focused on a collaboration #beer cooked up between #BoneyardBeer and #YMarketBrewing of Japan—Yokozuna IPA, brewed for the Fuji to Hood Festival and released on draft at Boneyard’s pub and taproom. Every collab brewed for the festival incorporated at least one Japanese ingredient, and Yokozuna showcases Sumo Citrus and Cara Cara orange.

A pint of Yokozuna IPA from Boneyard Beer of Bend, Oregon. It's a citrus-infused India pale ale, and the glass showcases the round "Boneyard Beer" logo, featuring a skull and crossbones where the two crossbones are also wrenches.
