A8. As a follow-up, today was another destination for me, also great. Pavia is a lovely coffee shop and lunch spot. It is a beautiful but challenging ride to get there, unfortunately mostly on a road without paved shoulders. Fortunately, it is getting better. Today was washboard for 5km as they are in the middle of replacing but they are adding paved shoulders!

Pastries on display along with the menu board at Pavia Café.Today’s choice: a ginger molasses cookie and an iced americano. In the background is a painting by a local artist.Road under construction, pavement ground down to washboard. But, they are adding paved shoulders.

when your bike 'won't start'

lol

ole dummy wouldn't wake up this morning

wheeled the bike out
like every morning
plopped the fully charged battery in,
smacked the pwr button,
put on my helmet,
and,
whaaa?

no display

huh

that was hours ago

not looking good:

e-assist cargo bike, sitting in the shade, controls & un-servicable display teased apart,

slowly tracing circuits with multimeter, alas, no joy to be found

#BikeNite A2c: Here's the bike repair station in St. Jacobs at the end of the Health Valley Trail. Same type as the one in Waterloo, but green. And this one has the pump nozzle chopped off... Sigh.

@ascentale
@xtaran @bikenite

A green bike repair station on a concrete pad. Behind is a crushed gravel trail (the Health Valley / Trans Canada Trail). There is lots of greenery on the other side of the trail, and some short grass to the right behind Bob's bike.Closeup of the end of the inflation hose where the nozzle for the tire valve should be. There's a lump near the end of the hose with a magnet so the end of the hose stays attached to the green metal bike repair station.Picnic shelter at the end of the Health Valley / Trans Canada Trail in St. Jacobs. There are three green bike racks ("staples") at the front of a concrete pad which is maybe 10x10 metres. At the back right is a green bike repair station with Bob's bike behind it. Also at the back there's a black garbage can, and two circular metal tables with attached chairs. There are wooden posts regularly spaced on the concrete pad holding up the shelter roof. In the background is a field with closely cropped grass, and even further back is a thick forest of trees.

Everything looks very new and antiseptic.

#BikeNite A6 from 6 June 2025: There are several upright bike counter displays in #WaterlooRegion. No idea if they're available online.

And there are MANY bike sensor loops on the various trails. No displays for these, so they must be available remotely somewhere.

@ascentale
@xtaran @bikenite

A blue, upright bike counter in Uptown Waterloo, showing "10" (but the display was actually 110, probably lost a digit because of shutter speed unsynced with the LED). Logos for #WaterlooRegion are visible at the bottom of the post.

The protected bike lane recedes to the left, the King Street Cycles LBS is on the right.One of many inground bike sensor loops, looks like a double diamond, one in each bike lane, separared by a yellow line on the pavement. The post (with electronics? connections to Bike Central HQ?) can be seen in the grass at the back. Bob's bike is parked to the left, obstructing one lane. Tsk, tsk!

#BikeNite A2b: One of the better repair stands at the Willis Way LRT stop in #Waterloo. It still has the nozzle on the pump! And a pressure gauge. Good selection of tools (on short, heavy chains). Good covered bike parking too.

@Brownian_motion @ascentale @Pionir @bikenite I've got to be klutzy enough in my dotage that I don't even try to drink from a standard bidon while on the move.

@nothingfuture @ascentale @xtaran @bikenite I might suggest these to the LBS. It would create a lot of good will. (I have no idea if there are regulatory issues.)

The only downside I can imagine for an LBS is a slight loss of repair income if people fix their own bikes. To me, it would increase my brand loyalty and make me more likely to take something to them when i can't fix it.

A5b. On my backup bicycle, a Giant Sedona, the grips are ergonomic, which helped.

The material was a problem in SouthWest Oklahoma because sometimes it was so hot parts of the sticky material would come off on my hands. Don't have that problem here in SouthEast Minnesota, even as hot as it is here today and tomorrow.

A5. I use green Lizard Skin brand tape on my "butterfly" handlebars on my touring bicycle. Been very happy with it in all kinds of weather. But I also have my LBS do a double wrap in the places I put my hands most often.

I tried doing it myself. Once. I do not have the patience. I'm fine with paying Owl City Cycles in Houston, Minnesota to do it for me when I need it re-done.

@moira @ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite Denatured alcohol is no longer available in California. The denaturing introduces nasty chemicals (so you won’t be tempted to drink it). I’ve been using 99% isopropyl alcohol, also as a substitute for acetone. Do wear gloves, but if you forget you’ll be ok. #BikeNite

A5. I don't have a favourite any longer. It used to be Lizard Skins DSP. The quality has deteriorated significantly and I no longer buy it. It delaminates if you give it a hard stare. Waste of money.

That Cycling Weekly rated it 'most durable' in its recent review is astounding.
