Four years after Gov. Greg Abbott announced Texas would be the first state to build its own border wall, Texas lawmakers have quietly stopped funding the project, leaving only scattered segments covering a small fraction of the border.

Just 8% of the 805 miles the state identified for construction is complete, which has cost taxpayers more than $3 billion to date.

The Texas Tribune reported last year that the wall is full of gaps that migrants and smugglers can easily walk around. Previous funding is enough to complete 83 miles with 65 miles now complete. It contains $46.5 BILLION for building the #BorderWall — nearly 3x as much as #Trump spent on the wall in his first term.

New wall CONST projects will fill border communities with workers who eat at restaurants, shop in stores & NG deployments will add to local economies.

But the biggest needs in the communities on the TX-MX border are drinking water, INFRA, HC, hospitals...

Hard facts for both #Republicans and #Democrats. I live in San Diego area and have long been involved in water safety activism in our dangerous deserts. This is security theater. Land crossings are very low in the sector. In fact, the border wall has been very, very effective since the Obama administration and Tom Homen largely secured it. Which of course means, people come by boat. The Pacific Ocean, boats land from Pacific Beach in SD to Santa Barbara! #borderwall

The cement border road, the new border fence and the old border fence next to that, all running in parallel up and over a few small hills before disappearing out of sight over a larger hill. The new fence is rusty steel. Then there is a wide, dry grassy area, then the old fence made of steel poles and covered with double layers of concertina wire.

After getting back from paragliding in Colombia a week ago, I couldn't wait to get back to the border. After spending the night at the asylum seeker aid camp, I went around the mountains to the Nogales side and got a whole bunch more #MuroLoco / Wall Crazy shots.

I'll be adding a bunch more soon.

The front fence is from the last Trump administration. The one behind is (I'm pretty sure) left over from the Obama administration. Note how much U.S. territory has been ceded to Mexico or become no-one's land between the fences.

The rusty steel U.S.-Mexico border fence as an abstract photograph. In the front, the new fence is a series of bright, rusty square steel tubes with a 4' tall flat rusty steel plate welded across the tops, supposedly to prevent people from climbing over. Behind the new fence, up on a hill above it, is the Obama-era fence, shorter and without the no-climb plate on top. Like the new fence, it descends a slight slope in stair-step fashion.

An abstract "arty" shot of the top of the U.S.-Mexico border fence. It appears as a series of pointy, rusty metal plates, like some sort of metallic dragon's-back plates atop vertical corrugations formed by telephoto compression of the 30' tall posts that make up the fence. The border fence road can be seen "above" the fence, though it's really an artifact of the telephoto lens and the angle of view. The road surface appears as black and white corduroy stripes: shadows from the low sun shining through the fence.

The previous "wall" near Tres Bellotas Ranch east of Sasabe, AZ. Based on a number of discussions, I believe that this was constructed under the Obama administration. It was torn down and replaced with the current "mine-is-bigger" Trump administration fence. This is just a small section of a huge pile.

We live on the dark side of these bars. The light is out there. For those in the outer world to get in here is simple mechanics: a ladder to go over, a cordless grinder to cut through. But for us to get out of this cage is so much more difficult.

A steep view looking directly upwards from the base to the top of the U.S.-Mexico border fence. The angular bars slightly converge at they approach the steel plate on top of the fence. Because the "bars" of the fence are square tubes turned 45°, the sun strikes the angled faces of some of the bars, lighting up the rusty orange of the exposed iron. The side toward the viewer is in shadow, creating a striking contrast between the orange sunlit faces of the bars and the bright blue sky behind the bars.

The sunlight comes in through the other side. We're the ones trapped by our shadows. Trying to keep the light of the world out, we've only locked ourselves in more tightly.
