I’m reading 3 books at the moment - it’s good to sit by the fan, reading & getting cool - although I’m tending to read Hornblower before sleep at night. (I’ve 10 books more in the #HoratioHornblower series to get through yet!)

Read my ★★★★★ review of #CSForester's 1938 #ShipOfTheLine, book #2 in my attempt to read all eleven #HoratioHornblower novels, set within the British Navy of the late-1700s Napoleonic Wars. goodreads.com/review/show/6583

1/4/24 — Open 6-9p. Mask recommended. No open containers, please.

Why this book, "The African Queen?" It's a classic novel by C.S. Forester, a great John Huston film with Humphrey Bogart & Katherine Hepburn, & I liked the cover. Set in 1914, written in 1935 (this Modern Library edition is from 1940), & a film in 1951, this is a tale that's stuff the test of time. But, the movie is different from the book... Take a look!

A photo of the book, "THE AFRICAN QUEEN" by C. S. FORESTER. A TALE OF HIGH ADVENTURE BY THE AUTHOR OF "CAPTAIN HORNBLOWER" from MODERN LIBRARY.

This is a vintage ex-library hardcover book. It's dust-jacket is protected by an old, clear plastic cover with reinforced, brown top and bottom edging.

The hand drawn illustration is a view of a small steam-powered boat on a wide yellow river, as seen through a break in thick, dark green, tropical jungle foliage.

May I also commend, as additions to your itinerary,

* #CSForester 's #HoratioHornblower
* #ArthurRansome 's #SwallowsandAmazons (and Racundra's First Cruise, which is not fiction)
* #ErskineChilders 's #TheRiddleOfTheSands

#34 Argosy - December 1964. Fleetwood Publications Ltd, London.

The front cover of Argosy for December 1964 featuring an illustration of a woman sitting on the edge of a table as two men, one standing and one seated, are behind her.

@JonathanCR

Perhaps try these:
#PhilipReeve - young adult target audience. The #MortalEngines series are place to start.
#GeorgeMacDonaldFraser - the #Flashman books are magnificent historical fiction, though are very politically incorrect.
#CSForester - the #Hornblower books are probably the most enjoyable set of books I've read.
#AdrianTchaikovsky - a prolific writer and the best contemporary #scifi I've read after #iainmbanks. "Children of Time" is a good start
