I've read that JDs trip to Greenland was an abysmal failure in that nobody wanted to host him and his wife, so they had to stay on base. The trip lasted 3 hours and cost how many millions, I don't know. I feel extremely bad for Myanmar, which is undergoing such a horrific situation after the earthquake, and I am extremely sorry the US isn't helping AT ALL, but Russia, China, etc., are stepping up to help. Also, I hear there is great celebration happening over the shutdown of USAID by the GOP/Magats. #CouchFuckerSucks #FuckTrump #FuckMAGA #USFascism #MidnightThoughts

The more I hear from people who've grown up with their parents, the more it sounds as if the average parent is an obstacle to overcome; rather than a mentor, or closest companion.

Perhaps I just happen to know many people who've had bad situations. But damn...

So much lasting damage from the two people who instead ought to be your greatest pillars, cheerleaders and allies through life.

Ever notice how the google maps view of SFO looks a bit like a Federation starship? Intrepid class, specifically?

No? Okay...

Tehe. Had to check it out, of course. Because, yeah, stupid yet funny. I believe it confuses Duft with deftig, I also got some canned meals in the results. Plus more stuff.
Now I want to know how L' eau de parfum d'Aldi smells, and the Hotwheels cars that were also in my search results reminded me of those toy parking garages on which I loved to let the cars run down the spiral gateway which reminded me of ball paths and how I loved them and now I'm fantasizing where I could mount something like this haba-pro.com/de-de/p/wandkugel in my little house. DIY of course, because in no way I'm able to spend 400€ for that. Love my brain. #midnightthoughts #AuDHD #actuallyautistic

If you are like me and have some form of insomnia, I want you to know I am just embracing it. I usually sleep from 1030pm to about 330am and then I am up for about an hour and a half. I am using this time to meditate, read, pray, code (not always in that order), game, or try to learn new things.

Checked out . Basically just Twitter like , but with more active users.

Honestly, I prefer but I’m interested to see how/if they implement on their platform.

Twitter *was* my jam, but I’ve found that I get more genuine engagement here than I ever did in Twitter.

When our son was born I would tweet what was on my mind as a ā€œmidnight feeding thoughtā€ or similar throughout the night… and let me tell you that lack of sleep leads to some interesting trains of thought that drive fun conversations.

So here I am now at nearly 2am after spending two hours comforting our now 3 year old, contemplating picking the habit back up.

I should just go back to bed, huh?

There's something very Miyazaki-esque about the way this deer is looking at me.

Or maybe all of Miyazaki's woodland spirits are just very deer-esque... #midnightthoughts

A white-tail deer buck is standing in the middle of a forest path, facing the camera. The light is coming in from the right, nearly horizontally through a break in the underbrush where a tree has recently fallen and the buck is standing in the resulting shaft of light as it illuminates the trail. The path is otherwise over-arched with trees as it meanders off to the top right of the image.

Midnight thoughts on unrequited love.

It’s ok to love someone who doesn’t love you back, or doesn’t love you in the way that you want them to love you.

It’s ok to hurt because of that. It’s not nice to be rejected. It can stir up a lot of emotions and have you doubting yourself, your worth, your place in the world.

But mostly, it’s ok to not have your love returned and that’s not the fault of anyone (you or them).

It’s not your fault for not being enough.
You are enough.

It’s not their fault for not seeing how amazing you are.
They do see it.

It’s not either of your faults that your romantic interests aren’t in alignment.
People are allowed to love whoever they want.

So, be all that you are. Be in love with yourself and anyone else you want. Your capacity for love is not limited by the love others have for you, only by the size of your own heart.

I will argue that the idea of abortions being a sin is a stupid idea, for both medical, ethical and religious reasons, but I will not argue that a person can’t hold that belief. I will only argue that they can’t, in a free and secular society, I pose their beliefs on the rest of the population.

But I digress.

I have a lot of questions (that no one seems to be able to answer) about a lot of ideas people hold about their own religion and spiritual beliefs which I may or may not, at some point, ask.

And I’m sure people who are religious have lots of questions about atheism, and I’m happy to answer any question you might have.

I am an atheist but I do not speak for all atheists. I will never claim to and I will never say that someone isn’t a real atheist for how they choose to be an atheist. The only defining characterist is the lack of belief in any god.

So, ask me anything.

And yes, we do mock Christianity. But in our defence, we also mock other religions depending on our cultural background. I carry on about Christianity because that’s the society I was brought up in, and it’s the one I know the most about.

Also, at least we’re only mocking your ideas. Should we take a dive into the history of Christianity and decide who should be apologising for what?

I have a very live-and-let-live approach to most religious people. I try not to attack people personally, I try to keep my remarks to their ideas unless they are using their religion to do something terrible to other people.

An example: I do not care if Christians believe that abortion is a sin. I do care that they try to stop other people from getting an abortion when it’s none of their goddamn business. If you don’t want an abortion, don’t get one. It’s that simple.

So every Christmas and Easter, the usual questions get asked of most atheists because we like indulging in eggnog and chocolate eggs as much as the next person:

If you aren’t Christian, or even religious, why do you celebrate?

And I’m constantly torn between the history answer and the sassy answer.

The history answer is that most religious holidays are corruptions of older pagan holidays, which evolved from seasonal festivities marking the beginning and ending of crop cycles and various other natural phenomena.

The sassy answer is that I don’t celebrate their holiday, I’m just doing what their ancestors did, and co-opting a previous ceremonial activity to enrich my own life. And how fun are Easter egg hunts?

The other thing atheists get is the accusation that we are mocking Christianity when we make the zombie Jesus jokes and point out the logical flaws in most religious stories.

And most religions were conceived before most real scientific discoveries were made. A lot of religion is just people going, ā€œhey, why do you think that big ball of fire is in the sky?ā€ and someone else making up some stuff that sounds *vaguely* plausible.

The trouble is, when people start disagreeing about whose made up stuff is more plausible and using it as an excuse for some of the most atrocious acts of cruelty known to man.

Wars. Witch trials. Genocides. Missionaries.

I could go on, but I feel like this whole thread could go for days even if I don’t. Did I mention I also officially studied history at university? Yep, (not so humble brag forthcoming) I have an almost entirely useless BA, with a triple major in English, History and Education. If I didn’t know how to do research and write an essay before I got to uni, I certainly did when I got out.

I’ve read parts of the Koran, parts of the Torah, parts of various other religious texts. Like, the readers digest versions, just the important bits. I’ve also unofficially studied mythologies from around the world (Greek/Roman, Egyptian, Asian, etc). As in, I’ve read lots of books but never been forced to take a test about any of it, which is good because I’m terrible at tests.

What I’ve noticed in all of this is that there are lots of common themes with religion. And you know why there’s common themes? Because religions are created by people. And people are people wherever you go.

There are good people and bad people. There are good people who do bad things and bad people who do good things. There are people who want power and are corrupted by it. There are people who fight to others rights.

I continued with scripture until I was 15 years old. Again, you can’t argue against what you don’t understand. Unfortunately, it’s also pretty hard to argue against someone who doesn’t understand their own position, and high school scripture teachers are not great at rebutting unexpected questions about the evolution of the horse.

Yes, I confronted my scripture teacher with pictorial evidence of the evolution of horses from a science book on the rise of life on earth. I was that kid.

Remember I could have opted out of scripture at any point during my 11 years of schooling that had scripture (the last two years we didn’t have scripture). I chose to be there.

So, because of Sunday school, scripture and family history, I own several bibles (including a family bible). I have read the whole thing. It is one of the most dull books I have ever read but I read it. And that’s the thing - most atheists have.

Post-Easter thoughts on religion (this could be a long one):

I grew up in a predominantly Christian society, raised by and ex-Lutheran atheist and an ex-Anglican agnostic, who put me in Sunday school and school scripture to learn about Christianity. You can’t argue against what you don’t understand, right?

I stopped going to Sunday school when I was about 7 years old because, and this is a direct quote from my 7 year old mouth, ā€œI go to scripture at school and that’s enough religion for me.ā€

At about the same time, I asked my scripture teacher, ā€œif God created the world, and everything has a creator, who created God?ā€ The answer I got was, ā€œhe just is.ā€ Even at 7, I knew that was a pretty poor answer. I’d have preferred an honest, ā€œI don’t know.ā€
