In his #CSUNATC23 talk “A Web of Anxiety: Towards a Less Stressful User Experience”, David Swallow of TPGi jokingly proposed a new CSS media feature: "prefers-reduced-anxiety."

That would be great for users, but how many websites would honor it? Too much marketing relies on deceptive patterns--like urgency, confirm-shaming, and sensationalism--that deliberately increase anxiety.

After attending a session named "Visual Tracking and Readability Issues on Mobile" at #CSUNATC23 last month, I downloaded BeeLine Reader, a browser add-on, to give it a try. I've been using it ever since. My eyes benefit form being pulled to the correct place in the next line by the matching color, as shown here.

The downside is: it's hard to get it to work on #Android. Here's the chronicle of my (partly successful) attempts:

Lines of text colored in red, blue, and black. The text describes its own visual style as follows: "In this example, notice how the coloring of the text works. Three colors are used in total. A line starts with one color, then gradually changes to another. The next line starts with the same color that the previous line ended with. This way, the eye is pulled to the correct line because it wants to look at the same color."

So. Anyone got a count of COVID cases coming out of #CSUNATC #CSUNATC23?

I have (rumors only) heard of 4.

I am not one of them.

I just spent a full week at the CSUN Assistive Technology Conference (#CSUNATC23), and I am still in a state of bliss.

Not only did my talk pack the house (with lots of questions at the end, yay!), but I got to meet a lot of happy nerds who are as stoked about accessibility as I am.

So again, if you have accessibility questions, please come to me. I am the happy accessibility evangelist, and it is free to ask me questions.
