"CAIRO, EGYPT—On Friday, some 200 participants in the Global March to Gaza were stopped at a security checkpoint outside of #Cairo, #Egypt as they made their way to Ismailia, a city on the Suez Canal 80 miles east of Cairo. After being held at the checkpoint for several hours and having their passports temporarily confiscated, marchers were physically dragged onto buses back to Cairo by plainclothes security officials. Other participants who separately managed to reach the hotel in Ismailia were similarly rounded up, some beaten and forced onto buses back to Cairo."

"Authorities at Cairo Airport have detained and deported tens of people who had flown to Egypt to participate in the Global March to Gaza, a popular, international initiative to travel en masse to Egypt’s border with the Gaza Strip to break Israel’s siege on Palestinians there.

Algerian lawyer Fatiha Rouibi told Mada Masr that Egyptian security forces detained 40 Algerian nationals on Wednesday morning to prevent them from entering Egypt upon their arrival at the airport to participate in the march. The lawyer confirmed on Thursday morning that all of the Algerian nationals had been released and allowed to leave Egypt following 24 hours detention.

Over ten members of a delegation arriving from Morocco, meanwhile, were turned back at the airport, according to a Moroccan activist who requested anonymity.

Another participant confirmed that Egyptian security forces detained and deported several Turkish citizens from outside their Cairo hotel, where they were spotted carrying Palestinian flags. …"

"In Egypte zijn deelnemers van de Mars naar Gaza opgepakt, meldt de organisatie. "We hebben berichten ontvangen dat meerdere marsdeelnemers uit Algerije, Tunesië, Duitsland, Marokko, Australië, Frankrijk en andere landen zijn vastgezet door de Egyptische autoriteiten in Caïro", schrijft de Global March to Gaza op X.

De organisatie roept op tot de vrijlating van de activisten. "Zij waren onderweg om zich aan te sluiten bij de internationale Mars naar Gaza, een vreedzame poging om de blokkade en de humanitaire crisis in Gaza te beëindigen."

Deelnemers uit tientallen landen verzamelen zich deze dagen in Caïro voor de mars. De bedoeling was om door te trekken naar Al-Arish, om van daaruit te voet door te gaan naar de grens met de Gazastrook. Israël heeft Egypte gevraagd om de activisten tegen te houden.

Onder de deelnemers zijn ook zo'n honderd Nederlanders. Volgens persbureau ANP zijn er ook Nederlanders onder de opgepakte deelnemers die Egypte wil uitzetten."
