The image depicts a richly decorated religious shrine, featuring intricate patterns and ornate calligraphy. The dominant colors are golds, blues, greens, and purples with embossed textures that suggest the use of metal leaf or similar materials for embellishment.

At the top center hangs a rectangular banner in white fabric adorned with Arabic script, possibly indicating its sacred significance. Below this, on what appears to be an altar-like platform, there are two small golden-colored bowls supported by slender stands, alongside another item reflecting light which could suggest it is made of metal or glass.

The background showcases the shrine's intricate designs: green and purple chevron patterns that frame a central field with Arabic calligraphy in gold hues. The script likely contains verses from the Quran or other religious texts, serving as blessings or prayers for those who visit.

To the left side on the ground lies an object partially obscured by another layer of fabric; its details are not clear due to this partial obstruction and angle at which it's presented.

Below all these items is a patterned rug with floral motifs in muted colors like pinkish-purple, beige, green. The lower portion also reveals more draped fabrics or garments contributing to the overall sacred ambiance of the scene.

This photograph was likely taken during an exploration related to biblical sites, as suggested by references such as 'Ro [...]

Close up of Dome of the Rock between 1950 and 1977. 1 slide : color ; 2 x 2 in.

#DomeoftheRock #Jerusalem #Islamic #Arabic #photography

loc.gov/item/2019705855/

The image displays a segment of an intricate mosaic pattern, likely part of the historic Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. The design is rich with geometric and floral motifs set against a background that combines deep blue, white, gold, and hints of green tiles. These patterns are framed by bands of alternating colors, creating a rhythmic visual flow across the surface.

Several arched windows or openings can be seen, which allow light to filter into the space they occupy. The craftsmanship suggests an Islamic architectural influence, characterized by its elaborate tilework and use of Arabic calligraphy within some sections. This particular photograph appears aged with a yellowish tint indicative of vintage film photography from around 1950-1977.

There is no visible human activity or modern elements in the frame, emphasizing the timeless beauty and historical significance of this architectural marvel.

what's interesting about this particular video is that the teacher does vowel harmony with the velarization—/a/ is realized as [ɔ] following emphatics and [ɛ~æ] otherwise, eg. /saː/ [sɛː] vs. /sˠaː/ [sˠɔ]—but /raː/ is with [ɔː] not [ɛː] as I'd expect. This implies he probably does [rˠ] which I thought would only occur when near an emphatic, not in isolation.

(notice that some Arabic languages like Egyptian have a phonemic /r/ vs. /rˠ/ distinction, which is not a part of MSA.)

The image depicts a historical photograph in sepia tone, showing the "Mosque of Omar" also known as "Dome of the Rock" located in Jerusalem. The structure is an expansive domed building with intricate geometric patterns and Arabic inscriptions adorning its facade. It features multiple arched entrances and large windows that allow light to filter into the interior.

In front of the mosque, there appears to be a wide open courtyard paved with stones or bricks. A smaller secondary entrance can also be observed on one side. The photograph is labeled at the bottom as "373 Mosque of Omar," indicating its catalog number within a collection likely held by an archive like that mentioned in American Colony (Jerusalem).

This black and white photograph depicts a woman with short, curly hair styled into an elegant updo as she sits on what appears to be a sofa. She is wearing a sleeveless dress or blouse adorned with vertical stripes of varying widths. The pattern gives the garment a textured appearance.

The focus of her attention seems to be directed towards something in her hands which isn't clearly visible, but it could possibly be jewelry items given that she's near an open box containing several small objects resembling rings and bangles. These are laid out on what looks like velvet-lined trays within the case.

Beside her, there is a cat with striped fur sitting comfortably atop one of these cases. The feline seems to be in repose or perhaps sleep, not paying much attention to its human companion.

The background lacks any distinct features that could provide context but appears neutral and slightly textured, which may suggest an indoor setting without specific details like walls or windows. There are some indistinct markings on the image itself including what looks like a handwritten note in Arabic script along with other non-English characters possibly indicating ownership notes or annotations made by someone who handled this print.

This photograph could be part of a collection, as indicated by an alphanumeric code "682-A" and another word that seems to have been inscribed on the negative. It suggests it is catalogued within som [...]

Oh good. Nice to see people still innovating in this field. 🫤 :oy_vey:

"A #conspiracytheory about a #book detailing a #Jewishplot to destroy #Islam and #Arabic societies appeared online over the last two years, though the book does not appear to exist. According to AI #antisemitism monitoring nonprofit #CyberWell, which first identified the trend, the #conspiracy is only just emerging, but it is an example of how antisemitism can be spread online.

Arabic language #Facebook posts, #TikTok videos, and online forums have detailed some of the supposed content of a book called "Tired Islam," ostensibly written by a #Jewish or #Israeli #author named Jacob or Yaakov Dunne. The book supposedly has four editions and at least seven volumes after being printed in 2011, but the earliest manifestation that could be identified by The #JerusalemPost was a 2019 Facebook post."

somebody pointed me to this paper about a Saudi Arabian animation published by Netflix:

"When Saudis Stop Being Humorous: The Subtitling and Reception of Saudi Dark Humour in Masameer County", Dimah Alharthi (2024)
doi.org/10.17507/tpls.1406.28

the gist of the argument is that the English subtitles are broken because the translator is Lebanese (so a Levantine speaker), while the show uses Saudi (Peninsular/Gulf) vernaculars and culturally-specific humour.

(person said they still enjoyed the show even with the inaccurate subtitles)

"#AntiZionist #protesters heckle #Jews and chant for an #intifada outside a #NewYorkCity #synagogue.

The protesters gather outside the Park East Synagogue in #Manhattan to protest an event by #NefeshBnefesh, a group that helps Jews immigrate to #Israel.

The protesters chant, “There is only one solution, intifada revolution,” “No peace on stolen land,” and , “We don’t want no two states, we want ‘48.”

#Palestine is #Arab,” they chant in #Arabic. One woman holds a sign that says “#Zionism is a death cult.”

One woman shouts “You fucking #Jewish pricks” at Jews walking past. Another shouts “you’re a Fucking rapist and racist the two worst things in the fucking world” at a man with an #Israeli flag."

I remember someone telling me synagogue protests were only against visiting real estate groups when I said I wasn't a fan. But this seems to have morphed quite a bit beyond that. 👀

Statehood notwithstanding, is the left now a 'no borders except for Jews' movement? 🤔

I wonder if any fedizens who speak #Farsi (a.k.a. “Persian”), ~~or perhaps it’s #Arabic - sorry; I don’t know~~ (edit: definitely Farsi) - would be willing to translate for me what Jeannie (from the 60’s tv show I Dream of Jeannie) initially says before wished into speaking English? The clip is here: youtu.be/7IEa9EFh4TM?si=OUsMTJ (edit, as it has tricked multiple people: continues after title graphics; see transcript of English parts below.)

I’m on a slight #IDreamOfJeannie / #BarbaraEden oddesy from mastodon.social/@spacemagick/1 on here that led me to this Facebook comment at facebook.com/share/p/1HbNJN465, and I’m intrigued.

@spacemagick @SpaceLifeForm @dancingtreefrog @revndm @darth_hideout

A commenter named Dave de Neui says ‘IDoJ was such a fun show. And, in the pilot, I actually asked someone to translate for me (while I played the tape over and over for him) Jeannie's initial words. Now I am working from memory - there was something in there where she thought Tony was as handsome as the Khalifa/Caliphate Leader - which, of course, wasn't something that existed in Baghdad 2000 years ago... it came after the Prophet Muhammad -- so it wouldn't have made sense had Jeannie been bottled up in Bagdad 2000 years ago and was just now released...
But, then, Jeannie being blonde wouldn't make sense either - LOL!
My translator commented to me (and part of the reason I had to keep repeating the tape for him) that Barbara was absolutely speaking
Farsi (or was it Arabic? I can't remember now) - but that she had the "thickest accent" my translator had EVER HEARD! LOL!
Still, he and I both applauded the very serious effort - as she COULD have just spoken gibberish (like in practically every other movie or TV show at that time) - but it was NOT gibberish! It was an ACTUAL attempt at the actual language!’
