The image is a black and white photograph featuring an elderly woman seated next to her painting of herself. The woman, Charley Toorop, wears a striped dress with dark shoes and appears contemplative or perhaps tired from the artistic process.

She sits on what seems to be a simple stool beside a wooden easel holding up another portrait in progress, which is also her image. Her pose suggests that she may have been interrupted during work, as indicated by the casual placement of one leg over the other.

The background is plain and nondescript, putting all focus on Charley Toorop and the unfinished painting beside her. The lighting casts soft shadows around the subject, adding depth to the composition without detracting from the overall clarity of details visible in both the portrait and its creator's expression.

A handwritten caption at the bottom reads "Els van der Elsken: last schilderd portret van Charley Toorop," which translates to "Edvan der Elsken: last painted self-portrait by Charley Toorop." This suggests that Ed van der Elsken, a Dutch photographer known for his work in the 20th century, took this photograph. The timestamp provided indicates it was taken between 1955 and 1956.

Overall, the image captures a moment of quiet reflection from an artist deeply engaged with her craft, offering insight into both Toorop's personality as well as her artistic process during that time period.
