According to #Ferlito1993 this is the earliest painted representation of a game of chess in the history of art.

Un couple aux riches atours s’affronte aux échecs. L’homme s’empare d’une pièce blanche, sans doute une dame, signe de sa victoire. De sa main levée, la jeune fille se soumet. De l’autre, délicatement posé sur le bras de son partenaire, elle cherche à en modérer les ardeurs. Ce dernier s’en montre accablé.

Le dessin a été attribué à un artiste actif à Lyon entre 1425 et 1460. Il pourrait s’agir de l’enlumineur connu sous le nom de Maître du Roman de la Rose de Vienne (Jean Hortat ?). Le panneau sur verre révèle une grande maîtrise de l’art de la grisaille : le modelé est obtenu par des lavis posés à la brosse, une série de hachures prononcées et des enlevés (ou retraits de matière).

De format quadrangulaire, le panneau a orné jusqu’en 1840 l’imposte d’une croisée (ou fenêtre en forme de croix) de l’hôtel de La Bessée, situé dans la Grand Rue à Villefranche-sur-Saône. Il représente un très rare exemple de vitrail civil à sujet courtois.
