The #platform is first and foremost a curated experience for its users, usually engineers in internal teams. We must design the platform with the user in mind, with a strong focus on the user experience and developer experience. A curated experience means that we provide value by focusing on reducing the #cognitiveload for users by making the platform easy to use.
Often this means simplifying the use of external software and services, through useful internal abstractions and workflows.
A few times over the last several decades I’ve unsubscribed from every social media account, RSS feed, newsletter, YouTube channel, etc. and started with a clean slate. My goal was, as I wrote about in 2012 on this blog, to break out of my echo chamber and hopefully expand my thinking.
Slowly resubscribing to my interests is a lot of work. But it has been worth it and I know I have been […]
Have you ever wondered how to measure #CognitiveLoad? There is no standardized scientific method for measuring it. However, for teams involved in software delivery and operations, we can ask about their understanding of the software, business domain, and user needs. By identifying factors that contribute to increased cognitive load, such as #testability, #operability, prioritization difficulties, and domain complexity, we can work towards alleviating these challenges.
Curious to hear how others on Mastodon experience (or push back against) the idea of ego depletion in their creative practices. #cheeio #EgoDepletion #CreativePractice #CognitiveLoad #MastodonCreatives

My latest blog post discusses one of my favorite pieces of advice on API design.
> When in doubt, leave it out.
It comes from Joshua Bloch, one of the architects of Java.
"There is no definitive metric for ascertaining the #cognitiveload of a #valuestream. Sometimes you can tell by looking at an event storm and the capabilities that a subdomain will be too much work for a single team. In other cases, the situation might not be so clear, so we suggest evaluating your candidate subdomains using this cognitive load assessment chart".

Hey @grimalkina have you written anything about what drives cognitive load in software engineering?
A coworker is interested in the topic, and I thought of you. They referenced an IEEE paper (10.1109/CHASE.2019.00030), so I am wondering if you have anything that's good or better?

@rustybrick @johnmu So I overlooked one short word in the middle.
You won't believe what happened next!
I read the following: "The Search Console delays are ... a sign of an unconfirmed Google search core ranking update".
A typical case of "just say the truth, don't repeat the myth." #CognitiveLoad

At the recent Agile Open Canada, someone proposed the topic "Agile as a tool to manage cognitive load". While the conversation didn't go where I was hoping it would, I thought this was a fascinating idea and this has been floating around in my head since then.
Is part of the success of agile because it helps us manage cognitive load effectively?
What do you think?
More about cognitive load itself at this article: https://unconsciousagile.com/2024/01/28/cognitive-load.html

Almost nobody will actually attempt to do this because the #CriticalThinking and testing of assumptions and biases results in a high #CognitiveLoad.
That load produces a #pain sensation, so people engage in pain avoidance behaviors.
What examples do you have of #platforms going wrong? 🤨
📖 There are many definitions of platforms, and I prefer to use the one from @TeamTopologies, where a platform exists to reduce the consumers' #cognitiveload. The platform has other characteristics that are described in the literature.

#Cognitiveload has a huge effect on the ability of teams to properly own & evolve the systems they are building & running, so how can managers help to reduce #teamcognitiveload? The most important step is for managers to provide a single, consistent stream of domain-focused work into the team. Find out more & learn how to apply the Team Topologies patterns & approaches within your organization from the #TeamTopologies for Managers" course.

🌱 In the past, I witnessed organizations adding more #coordination roles, trying to tame the "problem" of people going around trying to get work done. We know that more coordination is not working. Organizations need to look at how work is done, manage #cognitiveload, and support teams to focus on the core of their purpose! Whether managing marketing campaigns, doing sales, managing IT infrastructure, or designing and building software.
