Budget bookbinding tip -

Someone here (I can't remember who or find the post, if you know please let me know) suggested using leatherwork tools for foiling instead of bookbinding tools.

I'm in Australia so a single brass decorative tool would cost me A$90 (US$60) plus postage ($20?). At the local leatherwork shop they have a huge range of embossing tools for A$12 each.

I happened to find an old broom handle that was the right size for a handle. I drilled a hole slightly smaller than the tool and banged the tool in (pliers around the shank, hit the bottom of the handle on a hard surface).

It worked a treat! I got four tools for much less than half of what a single brass one would cost me.
