Over 1900 artists, music professionals and supporters signed The SMIA's Open Letter on the Culture Funding Crisis, sent today.

We urge the Scottish Government to immediately reinstate Creative Scotland’s Open Fund for Individuals and Youth Music Funds, and confirm the planned £25 million increase in cultural funding for 2025 will be secured by the start of the new financial year.

Last week Creative Scotland announced multiple closures and delays in funding for the culture sector because they are uncertain if the Scottish Government will deliver their funding.

This will impact everybody connected to Scotland's cultural scene, from artists to administrators to participants to audiences. Multiple organisations have written this joint letter to the Scottish Government in response - smia.org.uk/news/open-letter-t

Demand the Scottish government restore arts funding now. #creativeScotland has ceased their Open Fund for individuals because the Scottish government is not delivering promised funds. This is devastating for arts in Scotland. This fund is a lifeline for artists, writers and musicians in #scotland #WritingCommunity campaignforthearts.org/petitio

What a wonderful project. And of course it was turned down for funding by the tone deaf, play-it-safe, unimaginative body that is (Un) #CreativeScotland.

Scotland’s arts sector is struggling, with many groups living on a shoestring: the title of an excellent poem by Kathleen Jamie which highlights the thin line between companies surviving and dying. I looked at the issues and the problem seems to be: People want the arts to thrive, but nobody wants to pay for it! #CreativeScotland #IonaFyfe #KathleenJamie #BusinessandCultureScotland #ChrisBrookmyre pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/lifes

What a shame #Scotland doesn't have a TV station like #S4C. #BBCAlba works miracles within its tiny budget but BBC Scotland is just dire. You would not guess from its output that Scotland is home to an extraordinary wealth of creative talents across the arts. Meanwhile #CreativeScotland doesn't understand the film/TV business at all. Tragic. #ScottishMedia #gaidhlig #colonialism >

Over the summer, we produced 'Up the Middle Road: Crichton Stories of Recovery and Resilience', based on an project which recorded memories and experiences of former patients and staff.

These were sensitively & creatively shared through new songs from Emily Smith & Jamie McClennan, and new stories in traditional styles from Amanda Edmiston.

We are grateful to Community Fund, , A.S.Watt Trust, the Crichton Foundation, Lottery & Crichton Trust.
