Recensione “The Shrouds”: Sotto il Sudario Niente
L’ultima fatica di David Cronenberg si apre su un corpo di donna in decomposizione, osservato da un volto in penombra, con i capelli grigi, ispidi, talmente somigliante al regista canadese da farti credere per un momento che sia proprio lui: un attimo dopo si illumina però il volto e riconosciamo le fattezze di Vincent Cassel, il vedovo al centro di una storia ispirata dal lutto vissuto dallo stesso Cronenberg in seguito alla perdita della moglie (sarà anche per questo che il protagonista somiglia così tanto al regista, immagino). L’elaborazione del lutto sfocia dunque in un film sul dolore, o viceversa, dove le ottime premesse non servono però a evitare una confusa deriva spy, tra complottismi, hacker e paranoie.
Vincent Cassel è un ricco imprenditore che ha basato il suo business sulla costruzione di cimiteri hi-tech in cui è possibile, grazie a un’app dedicata e a un particolare sudario (che non sfigurerebbe al Met Gala), monitorare in tempo reale la decomposizione del proprio caro estinto. I problemi cominciano quando l’uomo, mentre sta mostrando il corpo in decomposizione della moglie durante un appuntamento al buio (non riuscitissimo, capirete), nota dei depositi ossei che stanno crescendo nelle cavità nasali del cadavere. Questa scoperta viene poi seguita da una profanazione di alcune di queste tombe tecnologiche. Poi entra in gioco un milionario ungherese che vuole trasformare l’attività del protagonista in un franchise e da qui una concatenazione di eventi che ci fa perdere sempre più interesse nei confronti della storia.
Fedele ai corpi tumefatti su cui si basa la vicenda, anche il film stesso sembra decomporsi sotto gli occhi dello spettatore (se escludiamo una splendida scena di sesso tanto fisica quanto psicologica, che è anche una delle migliori sequenze del film, annunciata dalla frase “i complotti mi fanno arrapare”, una citazione che potrebbe decisamente funzionare su una linea di t-shirt per annoiati teenager statunitensi o addirittura sulle tazze per il caffè): i tentativi di Karsh, il protagonista, di mandare via il dolore rimpiazzandolo con qualcosa di più tangibile di uno schermo con un corpo in decomposizione cozzano decisamente con la sottotrama cospiratoria, a tal punto da non far capire né a lui, né tantomeno allo spettatore, la direzione in cui il film si sta dirigendo. Resta il rimpianto di qualcosa che, senza tutta quella fuffa complottista, sarebbe stata un bellissimo film sulla ricerca della nostra metà perduta, sulla possibilità di vivere ancora nonostante un dolore che ha mutilato il nostro corpo. Sotto il sudario però ci sono solo ossa, nonostante un film di Cronenberg meriti sempre il nostro tempo.
