If you're looking for something spooky to watch and haven't come across this one before, here's my short review of Curon - the Italian supernatural drama series originally released back in 2020.
It seems to have received some bad press (apparently some have found it too boring lol). Well, it checked all the right boxes with me!
TV review: Curon
Curon is a relatively new supernatural drama series, released on Netflix in 2020.
The plot revolves around a mother, Anna, who returns to her mysterious hometown of Curon with her teenage twins, Daria and Mauro, after 17 years of absence. As soon as they arrive, strange and unsettling events begin to unfold, deeply connected to the town’s troubled past. There’s a local legend that states if the bells of the submerged church tower ring, something sinister will happen. Unsurprisingly, those bells do ring, and as Anna suddenly disappears with no trace, the teenagers attempt to find her, uncovering all kinds of secrets in the process.

The lake with the submerged tower is also real, as are many other details shown in the series, including the occasional use of a German dialect spoken in the area. The plot uses various elements of actual history and culture of the region, adding a layer of folkloric belief in doppelgängers: as we learn early on in the series, the place is beset with these supernatural doubles of living people. Representing the deepest longings and unfulfilled, frustrated desires of their original living selves, they emerge from the lake, haunt their originals, and…
Obviously, I won’t add any spoilers, just to add that the series, dark and spooky as it is, feels more like a psychological thriller than a fantasy. The main characters may be the two teens, but the series is a lot more mature than your typical supernatural teen fantasy. There’s not much gore, either, as its forte lies in creating eerie atmosphere and maintaining suspense.
I rarely binge on TV shows, but I watched all seven episodes of Curon in two sittings. I initially picked it just so I could watch something in Italian for my language practice, but I ended up enjoying the storyline and all the lore behind it. I particularly liked the creative interplay between the fictional narrative and the real-life Curon, as it added a lot to the sense of authenticity. The release of season 2 is scheduled for June 2026, and I’m looking forward to it!
