I’m on my way to #EntSoc23 & #ECN2023 on a bus going 70 mph, but my computer is sending an OCR generated text file from a scanned collecting event sheet and sending it to #chatgpt to parse into a #darwincore formatted spreadsheet. What a crazy weird world we live in.

For those of you doing #EcologicalMonitoring, note that a group at #TDWG, led by Yanina Sica, has been working on a set of global data standards for ecological monitoring, called the #HumboldtCore. This builds on the widely used #DarwinCore that is used for museum collections and casual observations (it's the biodiversity data sharing standard that makes #GBIF possible).

This month the final draft of Humboldt Core is open for public feedback at github.com/tdwg/hc/milestone/1

Wow. Deb Paul of #iDigBio uses #ChatGPT to parse fields from raw OCR into structured data (#DarwinCore):

OK fans: It seems Darwin Core doesn't currently have a way to express "confidence" or "probability" in observations. (Whether human or machine.) Is there an ongoing discussion about how best to implement this? Where should I discuss it?
