Wall of the Fallen.

This is your semi-regularly-scheduled reminder to do your backups!

A photograph of the side of a metal filing cabinet, taken at an oblique angle. Spread across the surface are 17 pairs of rare-earth magnets (probably neodymium-iron-boron, the most common kind). These are used in computer hard disk drives as part of the head mechanism; so called "voice coil" drives (which is all modern drives) position the head extremely finely by inducing a magnetic field in a coil attached to the pivoting arm that holds the read/write heads. The arm and coil are placed between the surfaces of the two magnets; by changing the field in the coil, the arm can be made to push against the fixed magnetic field of the magnets, resulting in very precise control of the head position.

These magnets were salvaged from disks as they died in my servers, so 17 dead disks are represented here.

Do your backups!

I am in middle of upgrading a two-SSD mirror to six-SSD ZFS pool. One of the old SSDs had reported occasional read errors.

Looks like i started at the last moment. After moving all data away from SSDs, unassigned the mirror, and rebooted, the sus SSD became completely unavailable!

The SSD was two years old with plenty of spare room to write. All SMART attributes were fine. Only reason to suspect the disk was occasional read errors in syslog.

I think i'll make the new ZFS pool as 6x2TB Raid-Z3, maximizing reliability. Although this is just a home server, I'm working from home and this is needed 24/7 online and any downtime hurts.

In the picture, Unraid shows "Unassigned Devices" available for pools and "Historical Devices" lists any dead disks.

Not a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon: catastrophic failure of laptop root filesystem, trying a recovery, even if I don't know if it's worth the hassle. Home is safe, Dev projects dead, but very little not already on remote git
Still not fun
