I am looking to host a **de-federated** mastodon instance for 300 to 500 people.
I wanted to know what kind server specs I should go for for this kind of project. should I go for 8gb or 4gb of RAM, roughly how many vCPUs/threads, etc..
Of course when prices skyrocket I come up with new projects.
Traefik v3.7.0-ea.1 is here for Kubernetes users with NGINX Ingress annotation support, smart service failover, and new retry middleware for reliability. Check the docs for potential config changes

Hi Fedi, how do y'all group and sort your media and data? Especially those of you who have sorted this out, what does your system or tree of content look like in your NAS and/or personal home directory? :akko_what: (Boosts welcome! :3 🔁)
e.g. where do you put Work, Other Important Documents, Not so important documents, Repos, Non-Coding Projects, Projects with both types of sub-projects, Random Office Documents, Music, Photos, Memes, Saved YouTube Videos, Recordings, Screenshots, Papers, eBooks, Scans, Audiobooks, Movies, Podcasts
I guess some of those are easy, e.g. most of the non-personal things, but then again, Audiobooks? group them with other Audio (Music) or other books? :woozycat:
Do you group file type or semantically by topic? or doing both depending on the situation? Or one content-based and one file type based directory tree hardlinked to the same data? :blobcatnotlikethisgoogly:

🔒 Tailscale If it's just for you, skip the public internet entirely. Use a mesh VPN. It’s faster, encrypted, and gives you a permanent "MagicDNS" address like http://jellypi:8096.

@orthogonality
can anybody recommend a tunneling service that allows me to host a single web service on the internet for free? i used ngrok but would like to switch. i do not mind if the domain is an ugly randomly generated one, it just needs to be somewhat permanent. it's for hosting my jellyfin through my rpi, so it's just for me

Self-hosting cost math that surprised me:
A $200 mini PC running 24/7 uses ~$25/year in electricity. That's less than one month of Google Workspace.
After 3 months, you're saving money. After a year, it's not even close.

#SonicTUI 0.6 is now out. https://codeberg.org/thelinuxcast/sonic-tui
Added several new features, and fixed search. The quest to center the album art remains, however. It's better than it was, but still not great.

Unpopular opinion: you don't need Kubernetes for your home server.
Docker Compose handles 90% of self-hosting use cases. Add Portainer if you want a GUI. Save K8s for when you actually need multi-node orchestration.
Quick tip: Docker containers restart policies matter more than you think.
`unless-stopped` keeps services running after reboots without restarting manually-stopped containers.
CRITICAL AdGuard Home update! v0.107.73 fixes a severe vulnerability allowing authentication bypass & full access. Update NOW. No breaking changes, just a vital security patch.

Welp, one of the cables I bought off of eBay was bad..!
It's the QSP breakout cable that goes to four OS2 fibers. I plugged all four into the patch panel, plugged the single fiber going upstairs into one of the ports and... no light received on any port. I moved the cables around and nope, still no light on any of them.
If this was for work, this is the point we'd send someone out to replace the cable... but it's only me and I only have the one cable.
