There's this weird thinking in my office that our members (mainly college faculty and administrators) don't know tech at all. Though I sometimes understand why they think that. Some of are members are batty with tech, fo sho.

But, I think this is more projection on our part. Because people on our staff are often afraid of technology, even some of the Millennials.

They assume that if we don't get it, no one else must get it.

When it's not true at all.

Coworker asked for help setting up groups/distro lists in Outlook. Major props to her for asking!

But she freaked out a lil setting it up b/c she was afraid our members wouldn't understand, would get confused.

I said: Coworker, this isn't new tech in Outlook. This has been in Outlook forever. (Before this, there were/are ListServs.) I promise you, they know how this works. They prob use them everyday. WE are the weird ones for not using these features regularly.

I currently have all of my peripherals going through a thunderbolt 4 docking station. I can plug in my laptop or switch which laptop is plugged in and still use the same keyboard, network, and monitors. Does anybody know of a KVM switch that I could use in a situation like this? I want to keep a desktop plugged in with its own networking but be able to switch which device has the monitors, keyboard, and mouse at will.

Recent conversations on Mastodon reminded me of the time early in my IT support career where I got a hard drive to spin up by slamming it against a desk.

Also, if you’ve ever been given odd looks because you had your ear up to a computer or hard drive, I will buy you a beer if we ever meet in person.
