So about this government #digitalID proposal…

Government data stolen in hack, minister confirms bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cj4qpw

To be fair, there are privacy preserving technologies that could make a digital ID far more acceptable. Zero knowledge proofs allow someone to verify information without exposing the underlying data. I am not an expert on the implementation, but the concept works and is already used elsewhere.

Serious concerns are being raised about the UK digital ID under Labour. Reports suggest weak security practices and outsourced development without proper clearance. This does not look like a system built to protect people, but one that increases risk and control.

Whistleblowers raise ‘extreme’ concern about security of government’s Digital ID | ITV News

My understanding from friends is One Login is a glorified bastion host that reliant services & parties are obligated to blindly trust, making it a giant SPOF; that alone would be terrifying at national scale, but then: this:

“Whistleblowers have told ITV News that One Login is failing to meet the mandatory, minimum government cybersecurity standards, ‘Secure by Design’ and the ‘Cyber Assessment Framework’”

Once a national digital ID system is in place, mission creep is inevitable.

We could be forced to use it more and more in everyday life, opening the door to unprecedented tracking of our interactions with the State.

Digital ID could lead to “the worst data breach in UK government history”.

Despite fierce opposition, the UK government is embarking on a digital surveillance infrastructure that has fundamental cybersecurity holes in its foundations.

We must say #NotoDigitalID.

UK Pushes for Digital ID, Age Verification on Devices

With the predictable failure of age verification, the UK government decided to double down and push for Digital ID laws at the device level.

Continuing the #nationalId debate, here’s the key part of the #digitalId experience in #Poland core mobile application called mObywatel.

When I want to log in to any government website, they display a QR code which I scan with the app. What then happens you see on the screenshot below (in Polish, sorry) and it’s the critical part.

The app tells me what personal details the website is requesting from me, and I am explicitly approving this share.

In this case, I was logging in to Polish social insurance insurance. The only details they need from me is name, surname and unique id number (think NINo) which binds to my insurance account. That’s it.

Why this is important? Because this explicit share approval provides you with full transparency on what data you’re sharing and with whom.

Of course, the social insurance already has all of my details since I’ve started university, but then mObywatel also integrates with commercial institutions, like banks.

Then it becomes useful, because you can literally open a bank account online using mObywatel, in which case you will have to authorise much more details - which you’d normally be required to fill in a paper form in the bank branch. But it will be always you to see and approve what you share with whom.

Screenshot from mObywatel which says what details the other website wants from you (name, surname, identity number) and Share button

@glynmoody

Sorry, but the arguments in this article reads just like yet another typically British monologue why single-glazed sash windows and separate hot/cold water taps are superior to the “continental” modernities 😄

First, please have a look at the list of “documents approved for voting in the UK” with 21 (!) different types of documents, whereas only some variants of some are approved (Oyster 60+ card) and others are not (any Oyster):

https://www.gov.uk/how-to-vote/photo-id-youll-need

This only exists only because of the persistent refusal of consecutive UK governments to introduce a single national id document, something that had been working in EU for decades.

Then have a look at another list - “Acceptable proof of address documents” which lists 10 types of documents, usually containing highly sensitive information such as your “mortgage statements” which in the UK you have to provide to any bank, employment agency, rental agency, property agency and a dozen of other companies:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/horizon-shortfall-scheme-appeals-proving-your-identity/list-of-acceptable-proof-of-address-documents-for-countersignatories

These, of course, need to verify your identity… but can’t because there’s no single national id so they resort to this kind of improvised risk-based methods, then keeping your sensitive documents God knows where and for how long. Because, you know, “it must be a paper copy” 😄

Now back to TechDirt:

Digital ID systems expand the number of entities that may access personal information and consequently use it to track and surveil.

Speaking of “threat to privacy” here, in the context of the massive privacy violations now codified in the British law because of lack of national id is complete reversal of truth. In reality, the only reason why national id has been for decades opposed is the lobbying of private companies who outsource processing of these massive financial data troves for their profit, selling “identity verification” service to the government and then selling you your own aggregated data in the form of “credit scores” etc. Just check all the “identity verification provided by E” at government pages.

And no, you can’t opt out unless you decide to live under a bridge.

Can't imagine why the #DigitalID debate was unlisted on YouTube. Certainly not because the proposal got absolutely savaged or anything. youtube.com/live/dCGWpaAfJIw

The UK Government hid the live stream of the e-petition debate on Digital ID on its YouTube channel (it is an 'Unlisted' video) making it much harder for people to find. This evening is the debate on the Online Safety Act. Will they do the same to this one?

🆔 Last week, the final Halathon of 2025 took place, with the second session held at the INPHYNI laboratory of Université Côte d’Azur. This second session, following the Halathon in November, once again made it possible to work on the quality of researcher profiles in order to improve the visibility of scientific outputs. The agenda therefore included creating accounts and idHALs, merging accounts (subsequently carried out by the CCSD - Centre for Direct Scientific Communication), as well as work on other identifiers, notably ORCid, arXiv, and IdRef.

The Halathons will resume in January! 📅
