#DoTheWriteThing

blog.giovanh.com/blog/2025/04/

If you are a @societyofauthors member (like I am), and you were there to post about #MetaBookThieves (as I was), and you want to #MakeItFair and make Meta #DoTheWriteThing (as I absolutely do), give giovanh's essay a read.

> What’s being (rightfully!) objected to is a new kind of *labor issue.*

> Corporations unfairly competing with workers: labor issue. Use of new technology to displace the workers who enabled it: labor issue.

#Meta stole my books: Cuentos incatásticos and Pachamama, diosa extraordinaria. Meta used the #LibGen dataset, full of pirated works, to train their AI.

Supporting authors and writers today as Meta is accused of using shadow libraries of thousands of pirated books to train their AI.

Meta stole my book. This does not make me special: apparently they stole pretty much everyone's. Specifically, Meta used the Library Genesis (LibGen) dataset, which is full of pirated works, to train their AI.

I call on META to - authors must be asked first before their works are used, and we must be fairly compensated.

As a member of the Society of Authors I support all their demands: societyofauthors.org/2025/04/0

Meta have stolen the work of 1000s of writers to train their AI. All of my books were included in their illegal action.

Today UK authors are protesting against this theft.

Copyright law is clear. If you want to use a creator's original, copyright work for any purpose, you need to get their permission and agree payment.
Copyright law does not need revising. It needs enforcing.

And fairly isn't just about money. Fairly also means abiding by what the author, owner, and copyright holder deem as acceptable usage. Not everyone wants their creative work used to train job and climate wrecking genAI. #DoTheWriteThing

Meta stole two of my books from a piracy site to train AI. I support the Society of Authors protest today and demand that Meta #DoTheWriteThing and compensate authors for the work they stole.

My work is among that taken by Meta to train their AI.

It's hard to make a living as an author, and the fact that a multi-billion dollar corporation took our work without paying for it is an absolute disgrace.

Yes, I am one whose work has been used without our consent. Technobros want to have quality texts for free. If they do want them, they should pay for it! Meta, !

With respect, the scraping breaches UK copyright law, among others. You may be fine with that, I'm not.
