"Do They Know It's Christmas?" the song written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in 1984 and sung by the star-studded group Band Aid, sold millions of copies, raising funds for famine relief in Africa. Ed Sheeran said on Instagram that he wasn't asked for permission to reuse his 2014 vocals and would have said no. “A decade on and my understanding of the narrative associated with this has changed," he wrote, referencing a statement by Fuse ODG. The Ghanaian English singer declined an invitation to participate a decade ago because of "the harm initiatives like it inflict on Africa," he wrote on social media. "While they may generate sympathy and donations, they perpetuate damaging stereotypes that stifle Africa's economic growth, tourism, and investment, ultimately costing the continent trillions and destroying its dignity, pride and identity."
