#Russia media continue spinning the narrative targeted for poorly oriented US officials about “demilitarised zone” in #Donbas. Today Russian media post the following headlines[^1]
Ushakov admitted that there would be neither Russian nor Ukrainian troops in Donbas.
Sounds reasonable, eh? A true “demilitarised zone”, no troops. What Ushakov really said:
It is quite possible that there will be no troops there, neither Russian nor Ukrainian. Yes, but there will be the ‘Rosgvardia’ there will be our police, there will be everything necessary to maintain order and organise life.
However, if you check what actually ‘Rosgvardia’ is, it’s fully militarised structure that had been even sent in the first week of the invasion on Ukraine in 2022. As of today, it has everything that army has, including artillery and tanks… which Russian military media are boasting about in open.[^2]
So it would be militarised by Russian army, just not called “army”. Who, by the way, can do looting, arrests and executions not worse than Russian army or “Wagner”.

Zelenskyy says the U.S. floated a plan to make the rest of the Donbas a “free economic zone,” which would mean #Ukraine troops pull back while #Russia also stays out of areas it hasn’t occupied.
I will tell you what would really happen: the same second ZSU leaves the towns, crowds of “men wearing military uniforms with no identification signs” will rush from the other direction and form a “local self-defense”.

The picture that probably best explains both why #Russia can’t capture the “30-50 km strip of land” (Rubio’s words) in #Donbas, and why #Ukraine doesn’t just want to give it up to Russians for free, even if we put aside any legal or moral arguments.
The yellow are fortification lines built by Ukraine since the original Russian invasion in 2014, and laboriously improved since. The density of these lines in Donetsk oblast’ exceeds everything that had been built elsewhere. When Putin says “we’re ready for war, but we want diplomacy” he was likely told by his generals that continued assaults on these lines will be suicidal for Russia, in literal sense.
Which is precisely why Russia wants to get them without fight as part of some silly “deal”, and why Ukraine won’t be agreeing to that until really losing the war. Letting Russians into these fortifications would also mean, that Ukraine would need to build another 30-50 km of similar lines to the west from Donetsk oblast’ to prevent repeated invasion after Russia signs the “eternal peace agreement”.
