Emmanuel Forever Shares Our Flesh

As the Day Begins

The promise of Emmanuel—“God with us”—is not merely a poetic expression reserved for Christmas liturgy, nor is it a fleeting moment in redemptive history that God later set aside. It is, rather, a decisive and eternal commitment made by God to humanity. “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). Matthew makes the meaning unmistakably clear when he writes, “They shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us)” (Matthew 1:23). What is often overlooked is that “with us” does not end at Bethlehem or Golgotha. The incarnation is not a temporary costume worn by the Son of God, but the permanent assumption of our human nature.

John’s Gospel deepens this mystery with simple but weighty words: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). The Greek term sarx (σάρξ), translated “flesh,” does not soften the reality of embodiment. It emphasizes vulnerability, limitation, and mortality. God did not merely appear human; He became human. Richard Sibbes captures this enduring reality when he reminds us that Christ “took on him our nature, never to lay it aside again.” From birth to resurrection, from crucifixion to ascension, Jesus remains fully human. Paul affirms this ongoing mediation when he declares, “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). Not “the former man,” but the man—present tense, eternal reality.

This truth reshapes how we understand suffering, temptation, and hope. Hebrews assures us, “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things” (Hebrews 2:14). Later, the writer adds, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses” (Hebrews 4:15). The Greek word sympathēsai (συμπαθῆσαι) speaks of a shared experience, not distant observation. Christ’s humanity is the bridge by which divine mercy reaches human frailty. As this day begins, the believer does not walk alone, misunderstood, or unheard. Emmanuel is not only with us; He is like us, yet without sin, carrying our nature into heaven itself.

Triune Prayer

Heavenly Father,
As this day unfolds before me, I thank You for the wisdom and love displayed in sending Your Son not merely near to us, but fully into our condition. I am grateful that You did not rescue humanity from a distance, but entered our story with humility and purpose. Strengthen my faith today to trust that You understand my limits, my fears, and my needs. Help me to live with confidence that Your presence is not theoretical, but personal and active in every moment I face.

Jesus the Son,
I give thanks that You willingly took on my humanity and have never abandoned it. You were born, you lived, you suffered, you died, and you rose in the same nature I carry today. When temptation presses and weakness threatens to overwhelm me, remind me that You have walked this road before me. Teach me to follow Your example of obedience, endurance, and trust. Let the truth that You remain fully human in glory reshape how I face this day with courage and hope.

Holy Spirit,
I invite You to guide my thoughts, words, and actions today in light of Christ’s shared humanity. Make this truth living and active within me, not merely something I believe, but something I embody. Comfort me when I feel alone, convict me when I wander, and empower me to reflect the compassion of Jesus to others. Shape my heart so that Emmanuel’s presence is visible in how I live, love, and serve throughout this day.

Thought for the Day
Live today with confidence and humility, knowing that Jesus Christ carries your humanity with Him—even now—and understands every step you take.

Thank you for beginning your day in God’s presence.

Quote of the day, 23 December: Blessed Marie-Eugène

What we are going to do during these days is this: to make our faith, our affection, and our love more penetrating and greater. And with this loving gaze, we will go to the Virgin Mary, to Our Lady of Life who is there upon the altar, and we will tell her our joy: Prope est iam Dominus — “The Lord is near.”

We know, O Virgin, that in a few days you will give us Jesus. And so we already congratulate you—not only for your purity and your integrity, but for your motherhood.

We remain close to you in order to receive this Child Jesus, this Incarnate Word whom we dare to touch, whom we wish to receive in our arms as though He were our own: He is Emmanuel, God with us.

He became incarnate to be with us, so that we might touch Him, embrace Him, and that through this outward and tangible contact we might realize an interior contact of faith and love, still deeper and more effective for our souls.

The Light of Hope: God with Us

When I was working at a company that developed arcade video games, we would put games out on test. These were fully built games with painted wooden cabinets and printed graphics. We would work with a location that had video games: usually video game arcades, but sometimes restaurants or bars, depending on the intended audience.

One time there was something we needed to fix in seven machines that were in the field. The way we needed to fix this was to replace a number of programmable integrated circuits, or “chips.” If you know the term EPROM, that’s what they were.

I don’t remember the number of EPROMS, but I think it was around 12. And it was my job to go out and replace them. The problem was making that many copies. I think it took about thirty minutes to program one.

Once we had programmed one, we had two machines that could copy them, so making the seven copies took another 30 minutes.

So 30 minutes per EPROM we had to copy, and two copy machines, makes it about 15 minutes per copy.

Or about three hours for 12.

Our games developers tried to explain this to our Vice President, but he said

“I WANT THESE DONE IN ONE HOUR. NO EXCUSES”

and stormed off.

One of our game developers said “someone better tell the duplicator machines.”

Let’s go to God in prayer.

God of wisdom, may the words that I speak, and the ways they are received by each of our hearts and minds, to help us to continue to grow into the people, and the church, that you have dreamed us to be.

Amen.

When we imagine the Creator, we typically use things we already know.

People often imagine their gods as men with beards, and usually men from their own ethnicity. Gods have the same desires and emotions we do. They often hold grudges.

And while we imagine that gods in ways we understand, we often use our experience to imagine gods who don’t understand us.

Most of us have had supervisors or bosses who made unreasonable demands. That’s usually because the supervisor doesn’t really know what it takes to do what we do.

And so we may imagine a Creator who doesn’t know what it’s like to be human.

How could God? God has never wanted for food, or had to deal with disease or injury. God has never been lost, or cold, or hot. And so maybe God is making unreasonable demands because God doesn’t know what it’s like to be us.

But then there’s Jesus.

However we understand Jesus, the story begins with his birth. The same trauma through which we enter the world is the way Jesus enters.

Jesus grows up the same way we do, and not in a king’s palace.

Jesus spends time in the wilderness, being hungry and thirsty.

Jesus eats and drinks with people.

Jesus stands with the people who have the least power:

the poor, the foreigners, those with disease and injury.

Jesus is loved by some, feared and hated by others.

Jesus dies. Painfully.

So if praying to an all-powerful creator of the universe seems like calling on a boss who doesn’t understand what we do and what we need to do it, praying to Jesus is like calling on an experienced person in our own line of work, someone who has been through the same – or similar – situations and knows how hard it can be.

Our light of Hope is the light of Christ, the light that darkness could not extinguish.

Our light of Hope is the light of Jesus, who suffered the same kinds of challenges we do.

As we stand against powers, Jesus stands with us.

As we work for justice, Jesus works with us.

As we cry out for mercy, Jesus cries out with us.

Even if no one comes with us on the journey, we are not alone, because Jesus walks with us.

It’s not enough for Jesus to be God with us. We also need to be with Jesus.

That means sometimes we will be in uncomfortable situations because

we stand against powers

we work for justice

we cry out for mercy

and we walk with Jesus.

If we want Jesus to go with us, we need to go with Jesus.

In Matthew 5:3-11 we read that Jesus said

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

5 “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil

against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven,

for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Matthew 5:3-11, NRSVue

Jesus did not say “blessed are the powerful” or “blessed are the rich” or “blessed are the well-armed.”

They didn’t need such reassurance.

But Jesus called as his followers those who knew what it was like to struggle in one way or another, even fishers, even tax collectors.

Jesus knows what it’s like to be us, and to a degree, we know what it’s like to be Jesus.

That’s why we’re the body of Christ.

So my challenge to us this week when we celebrate the Word made flesh, God-with-us, coming into our world, is first to know that we do not face challenges alone, but that Jesus is with us, and second that we are called to face challenges with Jesus, and to not avoid them.

Amen.

Emmanuel Still With Us, Even Now

As the Day Ends

As Advent draws our attention toward the mystery of God with us, evening becomes a fitting hour to linger over what that truth truly means. Isaiah’s promise, “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14), is not only a prophecy fulfilled in Bethlehem; it is a reality that stretches into heaven itself. Matthew reminds us that Immanuel means “God with us” (Matthew 1:23), but Richard Sibbes presses the insight further: God with us did not end at the manger, nor even at the cross or the empty tomb. God with us continues because God in our nature is forever in heaven. As the day ends, this truth invites deep rest for the soul.

Hebrews 4:14–16 draws our gaze upward: “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.” Jesus did not discard His humanity when He ascended. He carried it with Him. The incarnate Son now stands before the Father as our representative, our intercessor, our advocate. Advent teaches us that the humanity Christ assumed was not temporary clothing but an eternal union. God did not merely visit our condition; He joined it forever. That means our weakness, our fatigue, and even our failures are known from the inside by the One who reigns in heaven.

As evening settles in, this is not abstract theology; it is personal comfort. Hebrews 7:25 assures us that Jesus “always lives to intercede” for those who come to God through Him. When the day has exposed our limits, when our words were imperfect and our efforts incomplete, Christ’s intercession does not waver. Sibbes’ language is tender and deliberate: our Brother is in heaven, our Husband is in heaven. These relational images remind us that salvation is not merely legal standing; it is enduring communion. There is no fear of a breach, no looming fracture in the relationship between God and us, because the bond is preserved by Christ Himself.

Advent evenings are meant for this kind of reflection. We wait for the celebration of Christ’s birth while resting in the assurance of His present ministry. The child born into our nature now carries that same nature into glory. Heaven is not distant from human experience; humanity is already there, seated at the right hand of God in the person of Jesus Christ. As the day ends, we are invited to entrust everything unfinished, unresolved, and unspoken into the care of One who knows us completely and represents us faithfully.

Triune Prayer

Heavenly Father, as this day comes to its close, I come before You with gratitude and honesty. I thank You that You are not a distant God, but One who has drawn near and remains near. You sent Your Son not only to rescue me but to unite me to Yourself forever. I confess that I often carry anxiety into the evening, replaying conversations, questioning decisions, and measuring my worth by today’s outcomes. Tonight, I lay those burdens before You. Teach me to rest in Your steadfast purpose and to trust that Your love does not rise or fall with my performance. As I prepare for sleep, quiet my thoughts and anchor my heart in the assurance that I belong to You.

Jesus the Son, I thank You that You took on my nature and have carried it into heaven. You know weariness, disappointment, and sorrow from within. You also know obedience, trust, and joy lived out in human flesh. As my great High Priest, You intercede for me even now. I confess the moments today when I failed to reflect Your love clearly or relied too heavily on my own strength. Thank You that my standing before the Father does not depend on my consistency, but on Yours. As night falls, I rest in the truth that You are awake on my behalf, preserving an unbreakable union between God and me.

Holy Spirit, I welcome Your gentle work as this day ends. Search my heart with kindness, bringing to light anything that needs confession or healing, not to trouble my rest but to deepen it. Remind me of the promises I have heard today and press them into my spirit as I sleep. Where my soul feels unsettled, speak peace. Where my faith feels thin, strengthen it quietly. Prepare me for tomorrow by renewing my inner life tonight, so that I may rise again mindful of Emmanuel—God with us, God in us, and God for us.

Thought for the Evening

Rest tonight in the assurance that your humanity is already represented in heaven, and nothing can separate you from the God who has joined Himself to you forever.

Thank you for your service to the Lord’s work today and every day. May your rest be deep and your hope secure as you sleep in His care.
