Holding a Woman, Life, Freedom placard, a woman from Tehran showing her scarred back, flogged for the disobedience of forced hijab.

“The morality police arrested me for resisting their van. My ‘crime’ was unveiling. After months of court hearings, I was sentenced to 74 lashes. The cleric overseeing the punishment stood there to ensure it was carried out. I won’t give up my fight against this brutal regime, but we are fed up with living as prisoners in our own homeland,” she wrote to Iranian activist, instagram.com/masih.alinejad/

Under Iran's Islamic sharia law, imposed after the Islamists took over the country in 1979, women older than 9 are obliged to cover their hair and wear long, loose-fitting clothes to disguise their figures. Violators have faced punishment including arrest, flogging, fines, and suspension of civil rights like the right of education and traveling.

A student at Tehran's Islamic Azad University removed her clothing in protest after being harassed and confronted by security officers over her hijab, during which her clothes were torn, a viral video shows.

Plainclothes security forces violently took the student with them, another video shows.

There is no information on her fate. Fars News, the Regime's IRGC affiliated media, reported that she will be transferred to a behavioral health ward. Taking women who protest hijab to psychiatric hospitals is a regular violent treatment by the Islamic Republic's regime to negate the Iranian women's act of disobedience.

The dehumanization of women by the Islamic Republic regime has been going on for over four decades.

In Afghanistan, organisations like DROPS are researching and documenting women's experiences under Taliban rule. They are conducting interviews and surveys that will help inform us how their lives have been affected by the new laws that the Taliban have brought in.

Or, in other words, collecting evidence for the ICJ court case against the Taliban for gender apartheid.

“When the first Taliban regime fell, the idea that we would once again see the persecution, isolation and segregational and systematic repression of half the Afghan population on the basis of their gender seemed impossible."

“But now, in 2024, it is happening again and this time we must find a way to fight for justice.”

Sima Samar,
Former minister for women’s affairs,
Afghanistan.

"The Taliban are to be taken to the international court of justice for gender discrimination by Canada, Australia, Germany and the Netherlands in a groundbreaking move.

The move announced at the UN general assembly is the first time the ICJ, based in The Hague, has been used by one country to take another to court over gender discrimination."

"After a campaign involving Afghan women and international human rights organisations, the UN special rapporteur has recommended that the UN codify the crime against humanity of “gender apartheid” in international law.

Countries must heed this call, and our government must do everything within its sphere of influence to ensure that this happens."

“We ask you to lend your full support to an intergovernmental process to explicitly codify gender apartheid in international law,” Sima Bahous urged the 15-member UN Security Council.

"There is no existing international law to respond to mass, state-sponsored gender oppression. But the Taliban’s systemic and planned assault on women’s rights must be named, defined and proscribed in our global norms so that we can respond appropriately.”

The most important voice in Afghanistan is, by far, the women, represented here by Zeira Zahdi and Fawzia Koofi.

Throughout the last 2 years they have been extremely vocal, but have we been listening?

The good news is that Afghan women know exactly why they are fighting- to win back everything the Taliban has stolen from them. They won't be quiet, and they do not give up.

"There are no days off."

UN Envoy Gordon Brown represents the second most important voice on Afghanistan - the international community.
He's calling on the U.N. to declare the Taliban's rule in Afghanistan a gender apartheid, and to declare it as a crime prosecuted in the International Criminal Court. This has to happen.
