The Ancient Whisper of the Sacred
Mushroom
Long before words were written, before empires Rose and fell, the mushroom whispered secrets to the ancient Egyptians. In the shadowed halls of timeless temples, these
sacred fungi were the keys-unlocking doors to
realms beyond the seen, gateways to cosmic wisdom.

One last photo to end this thread on San Pedro 🌡.

It is a San Pedro cactus intertwined with a Brugmansia (Angel's trumpet), which is closely related to Datura, another psychoactive plant. Although there, it was purely an ornamental plant.

Another pot of boiling San Pedro 🌡! This one from Ecuador.
Unlike the one prepared with fresh cactus that I shared earlier, this one is made from dried powder.
Unfortunately, I wasn't there to follow the whole process, and I don't know the details.

Then, the slices of cactus are boiled in water for a few hours.
Here's a photo I took when my friend was preparing it in Peru, in the sacred valley of Cusco. I was in charged of skimming off the froth, which makes it bitter!

Some people also add (plenty of) lemon squeeze for a better taste.

How do you prepare San Pedro? 🌡

First, the cactus is sliced. You get star shaped slices. The shape varies depending on the number of ribs and the size of the cactus.

The tip of the cactus is usually kept to grow another plant, by simply placing it on a fresh soil.

I didn't have a photo of this step, and I found this one on Wikimedia Commons.

In this close-up photo, you can see that San Pedro cacti 🌡 have 6 to 8 ribs. The plant grows more ribs as it gets bigger. Of course the symbolic of the number of ribs can be of importance during ceremonies. I heard some have as many as 13, 17...!

Notice also the nice green-blue colour.

This photo was taken from the same botanical garden than the previous one.

New thread 🧡! I want to talk about San Pedro, the cactus 🌡.

It's a plant medicine that is very dear to me because of its capacity to open your heart.

It grows in the mountain regions of the Andes, especially in Ecuador, Peru and Colombia.

San Pedro is used for different closely related cacti. Here is a photo of Trichocereus macrogonus var. pachanoi I took in a botanical garden in Quito..

The ceremony is now underway. While the ayahuasca is working, everybody is playing music, singing, and dancing.

It's a real celebration of life. The music, the fire, the dance... everything takes on a surreal aspect. I ask myself if I am dreaming or if it is reality!

The ayahuasca has cooled down and is ready. It's around 8pm, the ceremony will start soon, the medicine man has already set up the altar in the maloca. Sacred and meaningful objects are placed in its centre (tobacco, feather fans, containers, icons...).

I can feel nervousness and excitement in my belly.

It finally starts to look like ayahuasca! The brew is left to simmer and reduce. It gradually takes on its characteristic dark brown colour.

When all the liquid has been drained out, what's left is the fibres of the ayahuasca vines and chacruna leaves.
There's no use for it, and it is discarded.

Once it has boiled for a little while, the brew is left to cool down briefly. The ayahuasca vines and chacruna leaves are separated, filtered out, from the liquid.

The next step consists of adding water to the ayahuasca vines and chacruna leaves and bring it to a boil. Typically, a couple of hours are needed to extract the compounds from the plants.

This is done in the ceremonial maloca where the sacred events and community rituals take place.

When the vines are clean, they are beaten in order to separate the fibres. This will allow the active principles of ayahuasca to infuse the brew.

Next, the bark of the vine is rasped with a knife. This is a tedious step, but a very important one. You want to keep the vine intact while removing anything on the outside that may pollute the brew (lichen, moss...).

Then, collect some chacruna leaves (Psychotria viridis).
