Just over a year ago, there was a story about a couple of people living in a tiny home in Queenstown's Fernhill. While one of them owned the adjacent section, their house was parked on a public footpath for two and a half years.

They didn't get on with their neighbours, which is never wise when your house is illegally parked. On a footpath.

Numerous attempts by the council to sort the situation were ignored. A court has just fined the (unnamed) man $42,655 which includes the council’s legal costs.

Queenstown - Funicular Fast-track Flops

Spare a thought for Dr Guy Hingston, the Aussie who tried to fast-track a clumsy project running two cable railways from the CBD, one going up Queenstown’s Fernhill and the other to the Ben Lomond saddle.

Hingston's humble plan only included a 1040-unit subdivision, a 1500-person convention centre, retail, hospitality and a new skifield. So, pretty modest then.

Declining fast-track approval, Chris Bishop said the application lacked detail and "... raises substantial concerns regarding the project’s feasibility, especially in relation to Three Waters infrastructure servicing, risks associated with natural hazards, a conflict with [Queenstown Lakes District] council’s arterial bypass and the viability of the proposed skifield."

But Hingston is undaunted, and I paraphrase: 'How about if we swap out the funiculars for pylons and cable cars?'

I don't think Mr Hingston is listening.

I guess the only thing this weather is good at us bringing out the good looks of the rain forest plants in the neighbourhood.
