На связи Аеза и сегодня мы хотели бы вспомнить замечательную сеть FidoNet, когда-то объединившую энтузиастов по всему миру. В предыдущей статье мы вспоминали компьютер ZX-Spectrum, историю его создания и вторую жизнь в СССР. В этой статье мы также поговорим о том, как и кем изначально создавалась эта сеть и как затем она развивалась в России. Да, для многих современных айтишников FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) ассоциируется исключительно со стандартами аутентификации. Но в прежние времена, когда над вопросами аутентификации в глобальной сети еще никто даже не задумывался, существовала сеть FidoNet и вот об этом и будет наш сегодняшний рассказ.

Spring-cleaning at @Wintermute_BBS continues!

I've replaced the rather dull #ANSI menus I once designed in a hurry and without any creative idea (I never liked those) with some "new old stock".

See, there were several ANSI screens I had designed many years ago but for various reasons did not put into use even though I liked the way they turned out (mind you, I'm not a real ANSI artist)

So now I put some effort into making them fit with #MBSEBBS so that you people can enjoy them.

The screenshot of the message area menu is a just a little teaser, there are many more screens but I'm not going to spoil the fun ...

... and of course, I've preserved the iconic "red pin" ...

@woffs Ich weiß tatsächlich nicht mehr, welche Software ich damals im #FidoNet genutzt habe. Ich weiß aber noch, dass es nicht #CrossPoint war.

@CannaParts Oh, du warst auch im #Fidonet? Das waren meine Anfänge. Da habe ich mich immer sehr wohl gefühlt.
Ich habe damals als Point mit einem 2400er Modem gestartet, dass mir mein Node geliehen hatte. 🫣

Ich lese ihn auch erst seit 2010 regelmäßig - obwohl er mir durchaus früher "übern Weg" hätte laufen können...🤷‍♂️

Aber erst seit Mastodon, existiert ein Format mit Timeline und Diskussionskultur die ich (sehr gut) ertragen kann.

Alle anderen Foren und Social Media Dinger habe ich nie lange ausgehalten.

Holy shit! @tomjennings, der Gründer von #FidoNet (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/FidoNet), meinem ersten Sozialmedium (vor 35 Jahren, als die noch #BBS hießen) ist im #Fediverse / auf #Mastodon!
Aber eigentlich war das ja zu erwarten …
Seine FidoNet-Policy: "Thou shalt not excessively annoy others. Thou shalt not be too easily annoyed." wäre auch heute noch eine gute Regel für #Onlinekommunikation.

I wanted to see something new in a daily used apps, I got tired to look at the same layout over and over.

So I changed Mail app layout to match #Usenet, or #FidoNet client, with list on top, content on the bottom. I also tweaked shortcuts for easier navigation and archive messages.

Part of me wants to go get an account somewhere and start digging in on this.

The first computer I encountered as a kid was a 386 DOS/Windows 3.1 box. Thanks to a couple #BBS's in local dialing distance and to #fidonet from there, I then grew up drenched in text lore without realizing it: mostly peculiarly academic focused #UNIX stuff and all sorts of 8-bit recollections. And so I learned #Assembly and C. I also now realize I inherited a lifelong nostalgia both for big-iron I've never touched and for an 8-bit era I never really used.

from a very brief mention in the bbs doc from @tomjennings, i tracked down a copy of the SEAdog store-and-forward mailer

i'm blown away that this much functionality was packed into an MS-DOS based program that could run on an XT with 256kb of ram. it even had its own routing system.
