If I remember correctly, I was running a BBS at that time, complete with #FidoNET and a bunch of files of dubious origin.

@troed @acsawdey @coucouf @somedude @pluralistic Yes! #FIDOnet was, in its heyday, an archipelago of local nodes each with local traffic, and was used as a pioneer email and BBS-type platform in East Africa and many other places. Public-spirited gateways enabled RFC822 emails. Thank you GreenNet and @APC!

Привет, это снова Егор. И да - это снова статья про Фидонет. Так уж сложилось, что именно эта тематика оказался слишком уж популярным на моём Хабре, и неразрывно связана со мной, хотя я всячески пытался "сбежать" от данной тематики. Однако я решил совместить приятное с полезным - рассказать про недавние мои поправки в NodehistJ , которые значительно ускорит индексацию диффов нодлистов сети Фидонет, а также значительно снизит потребление ОЗУ, за счёт одного из лучших вещей, которая есть в Spring Data JDBC - live streaming данных с СУБД без использования неэффективной пагинации. Данная технология позволяет быстро перебирать нодлисты за считанные минуты, и ускорить индексацию даже на слабых серверах, за счёт прямого перебора данных из СУБД, в live-режиме, без использования неэффективной пагинации, но с использованием самых обычного Java Streams.

Like any #tool, #AI can be used for good or ill. #AI isn't the real problem; it's the lies people tell themselves and each other about AI that are the real issues.

- Autocomplete is never going to wake up.
- #Techbros aren't #gods creating life in their own image.
- If AI was really that amazing, they wouldn't have to try to force it on everyone.

🌻 Before the big social media companies, FidoNet was a network where people talked on simple bulletin boards.

You only saw the messages you chose, and you could download them to read later—no endless scrolling! It was simple, and the people had control.

What if we made the Fediverse work like that?

• S. had zelf #Kubuntu geïnstalleerd, en kwam naar ons om te vragen hoe dat nou allemaal werkte. Dat lukt natuurlijk niet in een middag, dus hem de basistips gegeven en verwezen naar de Linux Beginners Cursus die we aan het organiseren zijn.
• A. was al eerder geweest voor informatie en had nu haar desktop meegenomen om het te laten Linuficeren. Er draait nu #Debian Gnome op. De meeste tijd ging nog naar de eerste instructies over hoe het te bedienen.
• S. had gehoord dat de #BigTech onze samenleving aan het overnemen was, en wilde weten wat wij ertegen kunnen doen. Ik legde haar uit dat er ook een #SocialWeb is waar burgers zelf controle over hebben, en misschien ook veel beter is. Maar van #HubZilla begreep ze niks. Maar ze wil er meer over lezen, en komt volgende keer terug.
• H. had een laptop van een vriend meegenomen, daar moest naast windows ook #LinuxMint op. Maar dat ging al snel verkeerd. Het bleek dat bij Windows RAID was geactiveerd. (Wat de meerwaarde daarvan is met een enkele schijf begrijp ik niet). Als die vriend RAID uitzet, willen wij het later nog eens proberen.
• Onze collega A. had een #MeshCore apparaatje gekocht en liet een demonstratie zien. Heel leuk, het deed mij denken aan #FidoNet, waarmee wij heel lang geleden de wereld probeerden te verbeteren. Dat ging via het kopernet van de PTT, terwijl MeshCore met radiogolven werkt, onafhankelijk van elk medium dat de vijand zou kunnen uitschakelen! Wij gaan hiermee door!

God I'm old. I was thinking back at how long I've been using something that could be called "social media" and went down memory lane about the platforms I've been on since the early 90s on slow dialup then realized my very first "social media" thing I was on was Fidonet's Echomail. Which was a revelation at the time and predates me getting the Internet at home, all you needed was to connect to a local BBS and you were connected to tens of thousands of users across North America.

I am expecting great things from @bytebro here, who no doubt spotted "southbridge" (one of the chips in a PC mainboard chipset) in yesterday's list.

"filesystem" is already ticked off, too.

And "mainboard" doesn't quite cut the mustard because even though #MerriamWebster does not have it, the #OxfordEnglishDictionary does.

Many computing terms are surprisingly a lot older than the 1970s and early 1980s.

But neither on-line dictionary has (for example) "elsethread", which no doubt @bytebro regards, as the rest of us used to 4 decades of threaded discussions do, as a normal word of long standing.

My first endeavor into social networks was with a #FidoNet node in the early 1990s.

Don’t think I’ve been so excited/curious about a tool for building social networks as I’m about @bonfire ever since.

That’s all good. Great, even.

What’s sad is that a huge part of that stems from where the centralized social networks took us.

Nevertheless, hope to take Bonfire for a spin ASAP.
