#FlameDeflectors

2023-04-25

The two metal structures are the flame #deflectors, which are meant to sit under the #launch table during launch to divert #rocket #exhaust away from the #vehicle to avoid thermal, acoustic, or debris issues, as well as to minimize damage to #pad #infrastructure.
Theses #FlameDeflectors were used at LC-34 for the #Saturn I and the larger, wider one was used for the upgraded Saturn IB. Flame delflectors are meant to divert the #exhaust of a #rocket as it #launches to protect the #vehicle and #pad #infrastructure.
After the #Apollo Program was finished, #LC34’s tower was dismantlted to prevent its uncontrolled collapse due to rust from the salt spray. The rest was #abandoned in place and a #memorial #plaque and kiosk were to memorialize the deaths of astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee during the Apollo 1 fire.

A photograph of two metal structures build in a rounded triangle shape, with thick metal paths on the surface and raised edges with little structure underneath except metal supports. The one on the right is wider and shorter than the one on the left. A concrete pad extends from the camera two the metal flame deflectors, with grass and then scrub land behind.
There is a white tower in the distance on the left in the distant.
