#FlickBoard

2025-05-11

Just found out that #flickboard has the abilty to change capitalisation of the current word under the cursor by capitalising the shift buttons via a "returning" flick gesture to and from the edge; just like the capitalisation gesture for regular character edge flicks.

Oh and while typing this, I just found out it's possible to jump word-wise via the space bar fast action while shifted.

This thing is PACKED with features and smart interface design.

@amadeus I have used #florisboard before and really like it. I'm just experimenting with alternate layouts to see how it'll affect my typing speed and if I can build a muscle memory around the 6 fat keys to type without looking at the keyboard like touch typing. It's impossible with qwerty.

I really like the flickboard keyboard for android. It removes all privacy invading crap like predictions and creates a touch typing like experience.

donwside: learning curve. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I've been using #ThumbKey for a while now and just found out about #FlickBoard.

It works a lot better IME and has tons of useful features such as the zalgo-operator. I can now type interobangs; how cool is that‽

There are so many hidden features that I'm still discovering; it's amazing!

I think my favourite has to be that I can hide the letters on the keys, forcing me to look at the text I'm typing rather than the keyboard.
This is how my keyboard looks now:

A screenshot of me writing this toot in Tusky.

The keyboard's 3×3 key's faces are largely empty, only showing modifier and arrow keys.

a while ago i got taken aback by the tone of messagease subscription model announcement (alerts interrupting you often, “pay up or else”, the keyboard could have used a lot of improvements (emoji selection was really bad) but seemed to stagnate)

i tried a few alternatives, even tried my hands at 8vim which i like a lot for writing prose but is not great at punctuation, numbers, special characters, etc.

and then i found #flickboard (by @natkr ) and it's great, it has copied and then surpassed message-ease (emoji selection is good now!)

the project just turned one year old: hachyderm.io/@natkr/1139774982

anyway, try it out if you are a #messagease refugee, or if you want a non-frustrating keyboard (hit me up for advice on speed-running the steep learning curve)

What a nice time for #MessagEase refugees. Not only #ThumbKey is getting into shape, apparently there's also #Flickboard that's also OSS despite being missing from F-Droid
And it has Control. Hope one also adds transparency at some point. Type your hearts out!
