XR voert opnieuw actie tegen Flying Blue van KLM

Vandaag demonstreert Extinction Rebellion voor de vijfde keer tegen het volgens XR beloningsprogramma Flying Blue van KLM. De rebellen beelden op Schiphol uit hoe klimaatellende eruit zal zien. De wetenschap is duidelijk: doorgaan met veelvliegen betekent dat de opwarming van de aarde ver boven de 2 graden uitkomt. Frequent flyer programma’s, zoals Flying Blue van KLM, belonen volgens XR veelvliegen en zijn daarom hét symbool van een industrie die weigert de klimaatontwrichting onder ogen te zien.

Woordvoerder Puk van Noort: ‘Helaas moeten wij hier voorde vijfde keer staan. Na een gesprek vorig jaar met Zita Schellekens (bij KLM verantwoordelijk voor duurzaamheid), meerdere demonstraties en een breedondertekende petitie, blijft KLM wegkijken voor de werkelijkheid. Met het huidige ‘klimaatplan’ zal KLM in 2030 méér CO2 uitstoten in plaats van minder [1]. ‘Schoner’ vliegen met technologische oplossingen vermindert de uitstoot veel te weinig en veel te traag. 1% van de wereldbevolking veroorzaakt 50% van de uitstoot door veelvliegen [2]. Dat KLM via haar frequent flyer programma, Flying Blue, deze groep passagiers aanspoort om nóg meer te vliegen en beloont met gratis vluchten en andere extra’s, is schandalig. Wij blijven terugkomen totdat KLM stopt met Flying Blue.’

Marketing en reclame zorgen ervoor dat vliegen een normale en leuke bezigheid lijkt, terwijl de gevolgen ervan desastreus zijn. Woordvoerder Laura Kits: ‘Dat Flying Blue de grootste vervuilers ook nog eens beloont met gratis vervuilende vluchten is onbegrijpelijk. De echte prijs van vliegen wordt niet betaald door frequent flyers, maar door de rest van de wereld, voornamelijk door mensen in het Mondiale Zuiden, zij merken de gevolgen van klimaatontwrichting het eerst en het hardst. Het verminderen van het aantal vliegkilometers door frequent flyers is de snelste en eerlijkste route om de CO2-uitstoot van de luchtvaart terug te dringen.’

Vliegtuigen zijn weliswaar efficiënter geworden, maar dit voordeel is tenietgedaan door een extreme groei van het aantal gevlogen kilometers. De sector voorspelt een aanhoudende groei. KLM streeft ernaar om in de toekomst op Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) te vliegen. Afgezien van het feit dat SAF niet CO2-neutraal is, is het erg duur en ontbreekt de infrastructuur om voldoende te produceren. Onderzoeksbureau CE Delft heeft recent een studie gepubliceerd die aantoont dat SAF een van de meest inefficiënte manieren van transport is [4]. Uit een in de Tweede Kamer besproken ‘Factsheet toekomst verduurzaming luchtvaart’ blijkt dat technologische oplossingen niet voldoende zijn om de klimaatproblemen bijtijds op te lossen [5]. De enige haalbare oplossing is volgens XR krimp van de luchtvaartsector.

FlyingBlue is the joint frequent flyer program of SkyTeam members Air France and KLM (and a bunch of other, smaller airlines). Its members earn XP to gain status within the program. While XP are predominantly earned on flights with SkyTeam members, it is currently possible to earn them with non-alliance-members.

This rule will be abolished on April 1, 2024. From then on, it will only be possible to earn XP on these airlines as part of an Air France or KLM code share. The rule affects new and existing bookings.

The rule change has been confirmed by Head of FlyingBlue CEO Benjamin Limpsey in a Flyertalk thread:

As we focus on adding more airline partners, we needed to make sure those members earning status in Flying Blue were actually travelling with AFKL and our alliance partners, hence the rationale for this change

Affected Airlines

The following Airlines are affected by the change:

• Air Mauritius
• Chalair
• China Southern
• Copa Airlines (Star Alliance)
• GOL
• Japan Airlines (Oneworld)
• Malaysia Airlines (Oneworld)
• Qantas (Oneworld)
• Twin Jet
• Westjet

While travellers cannot advance their FlyingBlue status with these carriers in the future, they are still able to earn reward miles.

You can still earn XP as usual on all SkyTeam members. Also, earning possibilities with Aircalin, Air Corsica and Transavia are not affected by this change.

Conclusion

Most FlyingBlue members won’t suffer a great deal after these changes, even if the XP earned with the airlines above could have made the difference between Gold, Silver or no status. What does raise an eyebrow is that the changes apply to existing bookings, as well. In the past, airlines honored the mileage rules at time of booking. Air France and KLM decided against it.

KLM AirFrance FlyingBlue suffered a breach.

There is specific profile data not mentioned in the list such as victims adress data. I found that a bit odd as its part of a user profile.

No information on attribution or if this was targeted at specific users or they just suffered a more wide breach. Important for victims to know. No mentions of any future comms updates either.
