#GLX

Fun #mbta fact, if you are packed up against the electronic farebox on a crowded #GLX train, and have #google wallet on your phone, it will automatically bill a fare to your phone's stored card every few seconds for the full duration of your trip.
This is the second case I've run into where the #Cubic electronic fareboxes have charged a card at remarkable range (the previous time my work expense account got billed for a random T ride).

Somerville graffiti fucks harder.

#SomervilleMA #glx #graffiti

A photograph of graffiti on a bridge underpass in Somerville, MA along the green line extension. To the left, two sets of eyeballs are stacked on top of each other, one looking right and the other left (shifty eyes). In the middle, black graffiti reads “Kill Musk” with an x over the I. On the upper right, black graffiti reads “Free the Children!”

For . This year I saw 2 different glass windows with a revolutionary message scratched in them.

First is from the Quincy House. 1776.

The second from the 2024.

From the window of his house, reportedly Josiah Quincy could see Boston Harbor activity. On his window he scratched:

"October 10th 1776 Governor Gage Sails for England
with a fair wind" in curvy script

The window pane is cracked now, and set into a frame inside the house. But on the tour they describe him watching the harbor from his cupola room and writing this there. One of the windows from a Boston Green Line train door. Etched into the glass is the text:
"For Luigi" with a star in the center and an upward pointing arrow.

In the background the Museum of Science is visible but blurry, and the window is a little grungy. But I think the message is clear.

I bet if #Boston had gotten the Olympics, they'd be saying that's why we finally got the #GLX.

I love these windows, and I love the art version of these windows.

The station in at Gilman Square station.

They saved that old building, which I noticed once has musicians silhouettes on the upper floor. And you can see them in the images on the station platform version too.

An MBTA large sign panel in the middle of the T station platform says Gilman Square and Green Line - Copley & West. The image below the sign text is two views of the building that can be seen behind the sign across a field and a street. It's color enhanced and artsy looking.

The actual old building is a faded brick one with a little decorative 3-window section in the center with arches and a bronze relief sculpture above that. The bronze panel appears to be a horseman with a pike and a gallant looking horse with one foreleg lifted.

But the secret is in the adjacent 3rd floor windows that have a sax layer and a trumpet player in black cut out pressed up against the windows. It looks cool backlit at night too.

@pataphysicker I'm in. But I will warn you it took 20 years to get the just from Cambridge to my neighborhood in the next town, .

I had a #dream last night with one of my recurring themes, trying to figure out how to get home on the T, #GreenLine as usual. (I hope that one of these days Dream Me will hear about the #GLX.)

I got off at one stop that wasn't anywhere near me because I remembered there was a big medical facility there with really cool glass structure around the entrance and I wanted to get a pic for #FensterFreitag.

Separately, as a personal challenge today I tried to recreate this show of in from this postcard.

Postcard view 1908: cardcow.com/458958/birds-eye-v

A postcard from 1909 showing the neighborhood of Gilman Sq from the old train station platform at that time, I think.

It shows a big expanse of grass with a tree and some bushes, with some fence along the front and at a path towards Medford St.

One of the same distinctive buildings is there, and also a nearby factory building, but other buildings that looks like small storefronts are no longer there.2023 view from the new GilmanSq MBTA station, aimed at the same building as the postcard. Some housing is visible over to the left, and one of the brick factory buildings remains on the right.

The grassy field is now a big gravel lot with some cars parked on it. Not pleasant.

Hey : heard about the Green Line closures on the news, but nobody mentioned a part.

"What about the Green Line extension?

Though not a full suspension, the Green Line extension to Somerville and Medford will close daily from 8:45 p.m. through the end of service from Monday to Dec. 10, while crews work to reposition rails the T says were constructed incorrectly....

Shuttles will run between North Station and Medford/Tufts but not to Union Square."

I had ~45mins to get to the Gardner (~3.5mi away) today. I foolishly thought taking the T would "save time," since the #GLX Medford/Tufts branch runs E trains. I know 😆 But HOPE, ya know??

I got on the train at East Somerville stop at 9:02am... and stepped off at the MFA stop at 9:57am 😩

It *was* a few mins faster than walking, but pretty sure I'd have been on time if I'd walked to Central Sq, hopped the #1 to Symphony, then walked up Huntington. Lesson learned (again): #MBTA is hopeless.

Despite breathless reporting by our local media outlets, I continue to not see the big deal about the gauge issue for the #GLX .

The problem is a bummer but it sounds super fixable, and folks are making a big deal over a nothingburger story. Folks seem to be getting outraged for reasons I don't understand. Y'all had bad requirements document and now have bad results, so to be safe you've got to move a bunch of rail over a eighth inch. #MBTA #MAPoli

@mattgriffin Ay yi yi. I was on it today, wondering.... definitely still had parts that were faster on a bike.
