Just a short one this evening as a reminder for myself. My son wanted to try a real time stratagy game, and because my wife loved the Anno series of games years ago, we wanted to give it a shot.

It is available on Steam, but for some idiotic reason this 15 year old game seems to need an Ubisoft account there, what sucks.

But it is also available on GOG.com for half of the price, so i gave it a shot there.

Unfortunately installing it on my CachyOS Machine was not a breeze, until i found the right combination.

And that is using Heroic Game Launcher with Wine-GE 8-26. With that version installed via the Heroic Game Launcher it worked right away. With other Versions i only got a blackscreen while hearing the music of the game.

[P] I know they fear the EU as GOG has offered them a bold Fuck You and they're still fine. In fact, they've doubled-down on supporting LGBTQIA+ games because they know what I know. I mean, the gaming industry arrogantly thought it was immune vis-a-vis the EU and the Stop Killing Games initiative. And now they're panicking becauae the EU is standing against them. So... This will all be very interesting.

[P] I no longer feel as bleak about this. I mean, the upside is that Valve/Itch work up the cojones to move their businesses to the EU. I'm also looking forward to Mastercard + Visa + PayPal thinking they're above the law and arrogantly trying to pull their shit there with GOG. I want them to try. I want them to because they'd loae really badly, and it'd set another gaming precedent. They fear the EU, though.

[P] I think the USA stands to lose a lot of business as this progresses. As I said, the EU has human rights conventions, so if Mastercard + Visa + PayPal tried their LGBTQIA+ purge bullshit there? The EU would sue them. GOG wouldn't even need to, the EU bloc would sue them on the grounds of human rights violations. I wonder how long it'll take the US gov't to see just how much business they stand to lose? It's a lot.

[P] The uncomfortable truth for the USA is that digital storefronts don't need their country as a physical location. I mean, China never has even with their physical product and digital storefronts don't even have to contend with shipping and customs taxes. I think this is going to go really well for GOG in the near future as they're in a good position to become the new Itch.io. itch could save themselves, too.

[P] I5 seems like GOG is protected as the Mastercard + Visa + PayPal LGBTQIA+ purge wouldn't fly under EU law, the EU has human rights cinventions that protect people from the transphobia and homophobia of these soulless banks. At this point, Steam should just move their headquarters to the EU aswell,since being in the USA has never really done much for them. Itch.io too for that matter, honestly. They'd he better off.

I stick to a clear philosophy when it comes to #GamePurchases, focused on ownership, platform fit, and how a #game is best played.

1. #DRMFree First
My top priority is owning my #games without restrictions. If a game is available on #GOGcom, that's where I buy it. Full ownership, no #DRM, no launcher drama – just the game.

2. Platform Depends on Genre & Controls
If a game isn’t on #GOG, I pick based on how the game is best played:

#StrategyGames etc. go to #Steam, since these are best with mouse and keyboard. Steam is my least choice overall, but still valid for genres where a controller just doesn’t cut it.

Everything else that plays best with a controller goes to #Nintendo #Switch or #Sony #PlayStation, especially since both still offer physical copies.
