#Glavel

We think we’re finally done with everything we had to get done before concrete. The Glavel is in and compacted, the filter fabric is laid on top, and the Stego radon barrier is installed under the building slab. Every one of the 22 (!) conduits and pipes has been meticulously sealed with mastic.

Tomorrow morning our concrete contractor will form for the two slabs and add rebar, and concrete for the first slab is due at 10am. Fingers crossed!

Build site with StegoHome and filter fabric ready for concrete pour.We cut patches to fit around the pipes and conduit as tightly as possible. The remaining gaps were sealed with mastic to make this completely air tight.

We’ve been making good progress on the build. All that’s left to do before concrete can be poured is install filter fabric and our radon barrier (15-mil Stego). But, rain has stopped play today and the concrete contractor is coming Tuesday so Monday is going to be busy!

On Friday we bought a rock bucket for the tractor which is a game changer for getting big rocks out of our soil before we backfilled.

All the Glavel is in. Well, all 18 bags that we had. We ended up 2 bags short so picking those up this week. It’s mostly compacted but a little more still needed. Overall impressions of working with Glavel are very positive - easy to work with basic tools.

If you’re not familiar, it’s a sub-slab insulation designed to replace foam board. It offers R-1.7/inch so our 12” compacted layer is around R-20, the same as 4” of XPS foam.

Our tractor struggles a little to lift the 800lb bags of Glavel high enough with the top handles. We had to get a little creative to first lift the bags off their pallets, then lower them onto a pallet we had cut the center out of, allowing us to open the chute underneath.

The last 4 days has seen a huge transformation on site in our utility building project. With all the conduit finally in, we’ve been able to backfill them with sand, add crushed rock to level everything, lay filter fabric, install the foundation drain and finally add Glavel.

Think we’re going to be a bag short so hopefully we’ll pick that up and get it finished today.

Finally finished laying all the pipe and conduit for our utility building. It’s been a challenging project figuring out all the runs, but really happy with the results. Now it’s time to backfill, install foundation drain, radon barrier and Glavel insulation ready for our concrete slab pour in just over 2 weeks!

Managed to successfully pick up our #glavel order yesterday. The weather didn’t make it easy - it rained all day! We had to make 4 trips to pick up a total of 18 bags but we got it done, despite #vermont #mud season in full swing.

I could really do without mud season (number 4, I think) this week! We're supposed to be collecting the #glavel (foam glass product for sub-slab insulation) tomorrow but the roads are a mess. Need to do 4-5 round trips with our trailer and it's not going to be fun.
