The pretty village and golf resort of Gullane in East Lothian. Gullane's origins are ancient and a church was established here in the 800s. This was replaced in the 1100s by St Andrew's Kirk, whose ruins still stand. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/gul

O suspense Meu Casulo de Drywall é um projeto profundamente pessoal para a diretora e roteirista Caroline Fioratti. Motivada pela vontade de refletir sobre as angústias e anseios da sua própria adolescência, a cineasta se dedicou durante 10 anos ao projeto até ele finalmente chegar aos cinemas, em 12 de setembro, com distribuição da Gullane+.

Fioratti tem, portanto, uma conexão bastante íntima com a história da sua protagonista Virgínia (Bella Piero), a ponto de entender como uma festa de aniversário pode se transformar em uma verdadeira panela de pressão, cheia de tensões e perigos. Por isso, quando o assunto são suas referências para abordar temas como a solidão e o luto, foi natural para a cineasta lembrar dos filmes que marcaram a sua adolescência. Afinal de contas, o cinema foi onde ela mesma encontrou acolhimento na época.

Caroline Fioratti, diretora e roteirista

A diretora Sofia Coppola foi uma das autoras que, para Fioratti, ofereceu uma visão honesta e, ainda assim, generosa para a juventude. “Ela me inspirava muito com seus filmes. As Virgens Suicidas, com seu olhar sensível para a adolescência, suas dores e máscaras, e ‘Encontros e Desencontros’, no retrato da solidão em uma metrópole de concreto”, revela. Mas algo que sempre chamou sua atenção na obra da cineasta americana foi como a melancolia se combinava com uma busca por conexão humana e por mudança – uma pulsão que depois também passou a integrar a filmografia de Fioratti, tanto nos longas, quanto nos curtas e nas séries.

A representação honesta dos turbilhões da adolescência sempre a interessaram como espectadora. “Isso passa pela minha compreensão de que essa fase da vida é uma ruptura, um luto em si”, explica. “Os sentimentos são vivenciados de forma intensa e, quando não compreendidos, podem se traduzir em violência contra si e contra o outro”.

Por isso, Fioratti também fez questão de citar Elefante, do diretor Gus Van Sant, como uma das suas inspirações. “Ele coloca isso na tela, além de fazer um trabalho narrativo muito interessante com cruzamentos e jogo temporal”, disse, pontuando que a dinâmica da trama de Meu Casulo de Drywall partiu justamente daí. “Impossível não mencionar também Kids, de Larry Clark, pelo trabalho com o elenco jovem e a ousadia de mostrar um retrato duro e monstruoso com muita compaixão”. Como o filme de Fioratti, a trama do longa lançado em 1995 também se desenrola durante 24 horas na vida dos seus protagonistas.

“A realizadora que sou hoje é consequência da espectadora que sempre fui. Essas referências são obras que me tocaram desde o momento em que as vi e que continuam me provocando até hoje”, afirma. Essa é também sua expectativa para Meu Casulo de Drywall. “Gostaria que o público estabelecesse uma conexão com esses personagens. Olhassem tanto para a dor, como para a inevitável monstruosidade deles, com identificação e empatia. Espero que o filme possa ser um instrumento de diálogo sobre questões como saúde mental e o adoecimento contemporâneo”.

Did part of the John Muir walk earlier today with a couple of pals. Ended up walking much further than we planned but the beaches at #Aberlady and #Gullane are pretty special and the weather was kind to us so we kept going. Done in now though, feet and legs are tired and aching.

Sunrise over the sand dunes at Gullane beach in East Lothian. The sky is very pale blue with a smattering of soft orangey pink clouds from the bright glow of the winter dawn. The picture is taken through the rushes growing close to the camera much further back. Although you cannot tell in the picture, there is a Westerly cross wind blowing at about 40 mph so the rushes are dancing vigorously in real time.
