Mnajdra liegt nur wenige Gehminuten unterhalb von Ħaġar Qim, dicht am Rand der Steilküste. Die Anlage besteht aus mehreren Kammern, die sich um einen zentralen Hof gruppieren. Ihre Bauweise lässt auf eine ausgeprägte technische und rituelle Planung schließen.

Zwischen den Tempeln finden derzeit Erhaltungsarbeiten am Besucherweg statt: dieses Foto ist also sozusagen also ein Symbolbild…. Die modernen Schutzdächer über den Tempeln, welche die archäologischen Reste vor Witterungseinflüssen schützen, bestehen aus einer leichten Stahlkonstruktion mit einer Membranbespannung aus technischem Textilgewebe.

Die neolithische Tempelanlage Ħaġar Qim liegt auf einer Anhöhe mit Blick auf das Meer. Sie zählt zu den ältesten freistehenden Steinbauten Europas und wurde aus massiven Kalksteinblöcken errichtet. Ihre Ausrichtung lässt vermuten, dass sie eine rituelle oder kalendarische Funktion hatte.

Außerdem besuchten wir die Weltkulturerbestätten Ħaġar Qim und Mnajdra. Die beiden Monumentalbauten liegen an der Küste, in der Nähe der markanten Felsinsel Filfla.

Der Zweck der aufwändigen Steinbauten ist unklar. Sie wurden 3600-2500 v.u.Z. errichtet; Vorschläge reichen von einer Orientierung anhand von Sternbildern bis zur Positionierung bestimmter Lichtachsen an Sonnenwenden. Ob es sich um religiöse Tempel handelte - wie traditionell vermutet -, ist umstritten.
