#art #history: if you've never heard of hazel scott (born 11 june 1920), may i suggest you read my little blurb below these modest scribbles i've done in an attempt to honour her? she was a fucking dynamo.

it was axed when she appeared before the house un-american activities committee because she'd been a vocal opponent of mccarthyism & of racial segregation. 'to hell with this', she said (or, perhaps, something saltier), & she moved to paris until 1967.

upon her return to the states, she got into politics in order to ensure equal recognition of black people by the entertainment industry. she carried on making jazz, collaborating with charles mingus & other musical luminaries. hazel only made it to the age of 61, when that bastard, cancer, smote her.

not only could she play two steinways simultaneously, but she'd clearly mastered the perfect eyeliner flick. i really don't understand why hazel scott - trinidadian pianist & singer who was born in 1920 - hasn't been as highly esteemed as nina simone. maybe she is. maybe i just don’t hang with the right crowd. but hazel...hazel was stupendous. she was committed to civil rights & even had her own telly programme, 'the hazel scott show'.

@lynnjbecker Saw the #PBS documentary on the life (and erasure) of #HazelScott when it 1st aired. It was very informative.
I already had an #LP of hers -- Relaxed Piano Moods -- & just received a #CD of hers -- 'Round Midnight -- that I ordered based on its mention during the show.
She obviously was a very talented piano player but unfortunately that doesn't come thru in these 2 recordings which sound pretty saccharine & lacking in any edge & excitement in a jazz way to my ears but I'll keep them in my collection nonetheless.
Hazel Scott🇹🇹🇺🇸 was a classical and jazz pianist who was first Black American to host her own TV show. Unfortunately, her career was greatly damaged by HUAC and the Hollywood Blacklist. PBS recently aired a phenomenal documentary about her that’s still be available for free on their website (https://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/hazel-scott-documentary/35137/)

After watching the #PBS #AmericanMasters program on the life of the virtuoso pianist #HazelScott, I was reminded that I have her album "Relaxed Piano Moods" in my LP collection.
What's really interesting about this album apart from it's delightful sound is that while Scott is the lead player, her "backup" players for #MaxRoach & #CharlesMingus who (at the time (1955) were just emerging as two of the greatest #ModernJazz (#PostBop) musicians of the era who have since become legends of jazz.
Roach had only started playing with #Brownie (#CliffordBrown) in 1954 (who tragically died in a car accident just 2 years later) and it was only a year later in 1956 that #Mingus released his epic album "Pithecanthropus Erectus."
It is also notable the #DebutRecords which was the label that released this recording was founded by Roach & Mingus in 1952 (& went out of business in 1957) and that they thought so highly of Scott that they presumably volunteered to serve as her sidemen on the album!

I just watched a very interesting bio of #HazelScott on #PBS #AmericanMasters.
Scott was a #Black woman who was a #MusicalProdigy who was enrolled at #Julliard at a very young age, who mastered the classics but who made a living mainly playing jazz & #popular music w/crossovers to classical music.
Hazel was married (for a time) to #AdamClaytonPowell, had the 1st TV show in the 50's staring a #Black performer before #NatKingCole got one, made a few movies on her own terms before being #BlackListed from the #movies & from #TV because she stood up for the herself & the rights of others & who lived for a time in #Paris, like a lot of Black creative people did to escape the discrimination they felt in the #US.
If any of this interests you, I recommend that you watch the episode which you can find in the link below:

Ethan Iverson’s new post on Substack today referenced this video, featuring Hazel Scott playing two pianos simultaneously. I had not seen it before—wow!
