This is a WIP I've had lurking in my folders for a while now; a rework of an older piece that I wanted to refine when I improved my tools. It's not been touched in quite some time... almost a year, I think... but I decided to get back to it as I was in between pieces (finished a commission, but not due to start a new Ko-Fi Members' WIP until after Valentine's Day) and needed something to scratch my painting itch!

#digitalart #digitalpainting #highlow #characterportrait #ttrpgnpc #wip #wipwednesday
A work in progress piece in my signature high-low style, featuring a portrait of young man with a scar across one side of his cheek and lip. His hair is not yet finished, but hints at being black when complete.

And to finish off my #HighLow theme, I found another #High (also I need a new theme!)

Glastonbury Tor, overlooking the town of #Glastonbury

A long path, made from low steps, running along the top of a grass-covered hill and disappearing at the end.
Below/in the background is a town with lots of black roof. Beyond, slightly misty, are paddocks, divided by hedges,

I realised that I never posted my last portrait here...

This is Tano. He is a male, Nair Serpensia from the south of Eirinn, who ran away from home to escape slavery. He has since joined one of the most prestigious mercenary groups in the continent and is the youngest member to ever make it to the Elite ranks.

Tano. A portrait of a male Nair Serpensia from the World of A'arde collections. He has black hair pulled into a small bun, pointed ears and snake scales visible about his temples and collarbone. His pupils are slitted, and he is looking off to the right of the image. The portrait is painted in my signature High-Low style using black and white on a neutral grey background.

There's 210 or so steps, but you don't go straight up. You start at a little door at one end of the building, which takes you up to the roof. Then you have to talk along the roof. And you also stop in the bell room and get to climb into and look at the bells. So not a particularly hard climb.

This is crossing the roof on the way back down.

#HighLow #BathAbbey

A narrow walkway with a sloping black roof on one side and a stone parapet on the other. At the far end of the walkway is a stone tower with carved decorations around its edges and top. In front of it, a man dressed in black is waiting his turn to enter.

Bath from the top of Bath Abbey's tower.

In cathedral and related buildings, there are often signs offering a tour of the tour, just ask [some person]. Not being fond of steps nor finding people, I pass.
But Bath Abbey is sneaky. Just inside the entrance is a little desk with a sign about their tower tours, and a nice person behind the counter looking expectantly at you. Also, a declaration with a long list of health conditions that you have to agree you don't have.

#Bath #Somerset #HighLow #LongWayDown

Looking down at street bordered by yellow stone buildings with black roofs. In a top corner is a black shadow and at the bottom, either corner are edge of stone, from the parapet on top of the tower.

The most obvious building in the street is on the corner and have a curved facade. It's three storeys high, judging from the three levels of windows (all multi-paned with white frames and dark glass, the upper level are smaller) Between the windows are bricks are ground level, and columns on the upper levels. One side is shaped like a tower, topped with a stone gazebo-like thing over a skylight. There is a similar one of the far side of the adjoining building, which has a central dome.
For all that the top of the roofs of buildings can be seen, there's not much sense of height.

In the foreground is large reverse-V shaped black roof with stone edging and two spires at the visible corners. The roof of the abbey building below.

Central Deborah Gold Mine, Bendigo, Victoria.
A lot of climbing and dark tunnels (and eating a Cornish pasty in the underground dining "room"). Not so suitable for taking photos, as least ones that actually look like something.

#GoldMine #Bendigo #UnderPhotos #HighLow

A rock wall with a tunnel entrance cut into it. The rock is mostly different shades of grey with some yellow patches, and white veins.
There are bits of metal and cables sticking out in various places, including three rails stuck in the rock on the left.
The tunnel ahead is dark but just inside part of a red barrier is visible

From the steps, a passages leads into a chamber with these pillages, which you can't actually see very well, because it's dark.

Had trouble taking photos because the camera wants to be able to see something to focus on it. (I put on camera, use phone to create something to focus on, turn off phone and stabilise camera. Not much fun. Also I couldn't what what I was actually photographing.).

I did make a video with the phone. It's very rough and shaky but it might give a better idea of the place.

A stone chamber underground. The walls are constructed from stacked stone slabs. In the centre a two long stones placed on end, The leftmost has another stone on stop. The are shining from the camera flash.

In the background, between the two walls is a space that leads back to the passageA low, underground stone chamber, with four of tall narrow stones placed on end, each supporting a squarer stone and looking like they are holding up the roof. The nearest two stones are shiny, from camera flash. Those behind are dim, hard to see. Behind them a stone wall can be just made out.

Grain Earth House, Kirkwall Orkney.

An underground Iron Age structure. Built about 2000 years ago. Purpose unknown. (Storage or ritual space maybe.)

#Orkney #IronAge #Steps #HighLow

Grey rectangular steps leading down into the darkness. Surrounded on both sides and in front are walls constructed from stone slabs laid on their side. Upper steps look a bit wet, because the weather was sh*t. Underground, weather is less of a problem.

The Bishop's Palace is across the road from the cathedral and built about the same time (12th C), then enlarged in 1540. An extra floor was added to the main buildings and the tower constructed.

#Kirkwall #streetphotography #HighLow

Looking down into a room beside the tower. There's a paved floor surrounded by three stone walls. (The fourth wall is below the viewing point)

There are openings in each wall. The larger ached opening opposites looks like a doorway but is instead a niche/cabinet. A big opening to the right might be a chimney.A view of Kirkwall form the tower. The road curves to the right and on the far side is bordered by two tall buildings, three or four storeys highs, with shops on the lower levels. At one end is a old grey house that is now the museum. On the other side of the road is part of the cathedral and graveyard.

The tower of the Bishop's Palace in Kirkwall, Orkney doesn't look very high, but it is quite high enough once you are up there, thank you very much.

(I'm not scared of heights so much as getting anxious in places where me, camera or phone could fall down and be damaged or lost. Which is quite, reasonable I think.

#Kirkwall #Orkney #Towers #HighLow

A round tower, missing it's upper floors. Built from slabs of stone There are three small narrow up one side. Just beside is a niche with a white statue. Part of the main building, also stone, is visible to one side.

In the foreground are a number of old headstone (upright, flkat, covered in lichen).Looking through a doorway in a stone wall. On one side some stairs can be seen curving up into the darkness. On the other side it's dark but it seems to be a stone wall.

Shot Tower at Taroona (2007), south of Hobart. Built about 1870. .They made shot by pouring molten lead through a colander. As it went dooooown it formed into sphere and hardened on hitting the water at the bottom.

#Hobart #ShotTower #HighLow

A very tall thin tower, built from sandstone blocks, against an overcast grey sky. The tower narrows as it goes up. The top is encircled by a metal railing. A series of small, narrow windows are visible down on side. At the base, the black room and upper floor of a sandstone house can be seen attached to the tower.
The trees behind the tower and building are leafless, and show as silhouettes against the grey sky.

Over the years, Hobart had a series of coastal batteries (small forts) built to provide protection from warships coming up the river. The first of these were built one Battery Point (now an inner-city suburb full of quaint cottages and old sandstone houses).
While most of the batteries have since been dismantled, one of the last built on Kangaroo Bluff on the eastern shore, is preserved as an historic site. There are stone passages, guns and information panels, although the underground parts are closed. It's sister battery on the opposite is all open but lacks any information about what is where (at least when I was there).
Back to Battery Point, the Prince of Wales battery was constructed in the 1840s. The second or third in the area. It was later demolished but the underground magazine remains. It was apparently a location for dubious activities, so a lacked gate was put on it.
However, at times the gate is unlocked. In 2014, it was used for a night time exhibition during Dark Mofo (mid-winter, city-wide, rather odd at times art festival). The art installation wasn't particularly exciting but it did provide an opportunity to wander around old tunnels at night.

This is the entrance. (Inside on next post.)

#HighLow #Hobart #Tasmania #UnderTheGround

An archway set in a wall, at night. To the left is the metal gate that is usually locked. A series of horizontal bars set in a arched frame.
Inside, the tunnel is arched. The visible sideway visible is constructed from sandstone blocks. There's a ledge about 2/3 of the way up, then the wall curves over to become the roof. A light shines up the wall and spreads out across the roof. Beyond, is another wall with an arched doorway. A second passage runs off to the right.

Apparently I forgot it was Valentines Day yesterday... so here's a late portrait I completed last year of two of my OCs. I had never done a couple portrait before, so I was pretty happy with how this turned out.

Original blog post about it here: aelyryapayne.com/post/latest-c

A high-low digital painting using black and white on a grey background. The image shows two men in a partial embrace, both looking off to the left of the image having been disturbed. The man on the left is taller, with light hair and darker eyes, and markings on his throat and jaw. The man on the right has white hair, his ears are pointed and slope backwards, and he has vine-like white markings on his cheekbones.

As well as the #HighLow style, I do some coloured portraits. These generally take me longer, and I lean toward semi-realism in my work, as I have not yet grasped skintone layering and blending!

I still find them fun, and I mostly do them for 2d Tokens, Character Portraits and, sometimes, as references for other works. I also use this style to depict the monsters I create for my games, as I like to show off the ranges of colour within them.

I hope to become better at colour works in the future.

Portrait of a Half-Dryad female with long green hair, green eyes and Elven ears. It is painted in my semi-realistic colour style using multiple layers and two different blending techniques.Portrait of a Bonemire monster, created for one of my tabletop games, having a coyote skeleton enveloped in a viscous, clear-white ooze. It is painted in my semi-realistic colour style using multiple layers and two different blending techniques.Portrait of an Ellynyn (Elven) male with bronzed skin, black hair and silver eyes, wearing a dark blue uniform. It is painted in my semi-realistic colour style using multiple layers and two different blending techniques.Portrait of a Cosmic Guardian, also known as a Star Horror, a creature created for my tabletop games. It shows an ethereal, armoured being in shades of teal and purple with white highlights, speckled with glowing stars. It is painted in my semi-realistic colour style using multiple layers and two different blending techniques.

Re-sharing some of my most beautiful boys, because I can!

1. Creed - massive, strong, hunk of muscle, but exceedingly sweet
2. Neyon - Smart and wise, but useless when it comes to his crush!
3. Border Knight and the Dryad Prince - polar opposites, but both crap at communicating!
4. The Dryad Prince - looks harmless and innocent enough, will absolutely rip you a new one if you anger him!

Bevyn is the owner and leader of the Blue Wolves. He is known to be charming, jovial and well mannered. But his true identity is a well-kept secret, even amongst the Elite Wolves. A key figure behind Aelyx Everbright's rise to the leader of the Fuldair People's Rebellion, Bevyn always sidestepped efforts to place him in a more prominent position, instead pushing for democratic leadership and returning Fuldair to the hands of the people.

My latest finished painting is of Neiven, the Tayaar Ginnaya Swashbuckler Rogue.
Crude, mouthy and chaotic, Neiven enjoys teasing others and causing mayhem wherever he goes. A mentally high-functioning drunk, he is sharp tongued and even sharper with his crossbow. Despite this, he is a caring person who will do anything necessary to protect his friends. He's openly pansexual.
Currently, his favourite pasttime is to torment Neyon with cheeky questions.

#WorldOfAarde #NPCArt #DigitalArt #HighLow

Neifion "Neiven" Aven, a Tayaar Ginnaya Swashbuckler Rogue. The image is a High-Low portrait using black and white on a neutral grey background, showing a young-looking man with closely cropped, curly white hair and long, double-pointed ears. He is smiling while looking to the right of the image, has pale eyes and smears of rough war paint on his face.
