Meanwhile, in #Florida - A White Nationalist Wrote a Law School Paper Promoting Racist Views. It Won Him an Award nytimes.com/2025/06/21/us/whit:

‘The University of Florida student won an academic honor after he argued in a paper that the Constitution applies only to white people. Preston Damsky… law student… white nationalist… antisemite…took a seminar taught by a federal judge on “originalism”… (he) argued that the framers had intended for the phrase “We the People,” in the Constitution’s preamble, to refer exclusively to white people…he argued for the removal of voting rights protections for nonwhites, and for the issuance of shoot-to-kill orders against “criminal infiltrators at the border.” Turning over the country to “a nonwhite majority,” Mr. Damsky wrote, would constitute a “terrible crime.”… Mr. Damsky, 29, was given the “book award,” which designated him as the best student in the class.’ #academia #LawSchool #HigherEd #AcademicChatter #racism #Constitution #WhiteNationalism #BLM #UniversityOfFlorida

"Texas lawmakers trying to muzzle campus protests have just passed one of the most ridiculous anti-speech laws in the country. If signed by Gov. Greg Abbott, Senate Bill 2972 would ban speech at night — from study groups to newspaper reporting — at public universities in the state.

Ironically, the bill builds on a previous law passed in 2019 meant to enshrine free speech on Texas campuses. But now, lawmakers want to crack down on college students’ pro-Palestinian protests so badly that they literally passed a prohibition on talking.

We’re not exaggerating. SB 2972 would require public universities in Texas to adopt policies prohibiting “engaging in expressive activities on campus between the hours of 10 p.m. and 8 a.m.” Expressive activity includes “any speech or expressive conduct” protected by the First Amendment or Texas Constitution."

Finally got around to my re-read of @timpratt's Doors of Sleep (and read the sequel for the first time).

Perhaps a forest-for-the-trees situation, but I had forgotten how large a role journaling plays in the narratives (the books are epistolary, narrated through journal entries of the characters).

The process of writing and reflection is affirmed throughout the story. Though there’s also a point where the protagonist stops journaling after a crisis, which I empathized with.

“’I like writing with a stylus,’ I said. ‘Back on my world, I used ink on paper when I wrote. For some reason, it helps me think better than typing on a keyboard does. I feel closer to the language somehow.’”

University unions have to pick up the slack here and get that into union contracts. The UC arm of the State of California too often exempts itself from California laws. #NeoliberalHellhole #HigherEd #WFH #California

"A state appeals panel has rejected an attempt by a professor to force California's public university system to reimburse his work-from-home costs during the Covid campus shutdowns.

The decision marks the latest ruling again finding labor laws that the state of California imposes on private employers don’t necessarily extend to government agencies."

@academicchatter @disability Once again, abled people made things worse for disabled people as they abused the rationing & policing model of "accessibility" as their ticket to university.

Making university as highest common denominator accessible as possible would eliminate some of what abled people are exploiting.

"Many colleges have adopted a minimalist compliance model—doing just enough to avoid violations—and in the absence of compliance verification and robust efforts to educate faculty, learning disabilities and the accommodations they require are still often misperceived as lowering academic standards or offering “unfair advantages.”"
