RE: zirk.us/@Doomscroll/1161993627

Man, this takes me back. I remember a ton of the mobile devs on Twitter doing once a week where someone would be interviewed about their work. It was easier to do real time interviews back then when everything was chronological, so you knew folks were reading in the order intended.

It never dawned on me that Mastodon enables this ability again. It’s practically a super power to even be able to do this. We should be doing these (and other real time stuff) all the time!

"Rebecca Solnit Says the Left’s Next Hero Is Already Here
As the old saw goes, the only constant is change. But change doesn’t always feel as overwhelming as it does right now. We are living in an era of widespread democratic backsliding, sweeping technological disruption and the slow-motion disaster of the climate crisis, to name just a few of the most troubling societal upheavals. But what if, despite all that, there’s a different and more hopeful story to tell about change?

That’s the question at the heart of 'The Beginning Comes After the End,'t he new book by the prolific and critically acclaimed progressive writer Rebecca Solnit. A thematic sequel to her classic 'Hope in the Dark,' the book shines a light on the vibrant world often hidden within our own seemingly gloomier one — a world that has embraced ideas of interconnection, ecological care and political equality. It’s not a naïve book — Solnit is keenly aware of the challenges we’re all facing — but it provides a stabilizing counterweight to the feeling that the world, of late, has spun dangerously off-kilter."

This article first appeared in Radio Times magazine.

It feels as though time has stood still in this bucolic spot a few miles west of Cardiff, and it’s not just because of the country lanes, green fields and trees full of chirping birds, but because all around me there is bustling activity that would appear to belong to yesteryear.

Young ladies in crepe bonnets stand by as horsedrawn carriages wait outside a beautiful Georgian mansion, and the Bennet parents line up to wave off their newly married daughters one by one – all except Mary who, as readers of Pride and Prejudice will know, always seemed a lot happier with her books than the birds or bees and, as such, is the sister left alone at home – at least for now.

It is Mary’s story that takes centre stage in the adaptation of Janice Hadlow’s 2020 novel The Other Bennet Sister. Hadlow was previously a television executive, which included the role of BBC Two controller from 2008 to 2014 but, despite her experience at the other end of the TV production chain, she was very happy not to be charged with adapting her novel for the screen.

Boarders creator Daniel Lawrence Taylor talks ending his beloved comedy show: "I want to keep making work about the Black experience"

fed.brid.gy/r/https://www.radi

This article first appeared in Radio Times magazine.

There was an awkward moment during Sir Lenny Henry’s address to the Royal Television Society in 2019 when, having lavished praise on Daniel Lawrence Taylor’s BAFTA-nominated comedy Timewasters, he asked the ITV execs in the audience if the show would be returning for a third series. Met with embarrassed clearing of throats, Henry went on to speak of the “two-season jinx” that seemed to bedevil projects with Black leads and writers.

But here’s the good news: seven years on, Taylor’s follow-up show, Boarders, has made it to series three on the BBC. The curse, it seems, has lifted. “Yeah, that feels so good,” grins the writer and performer, at home in south London. “You wouldn’t believe the number of Black creators who’ve mentioned that to me. Just the other day I was speaking to Adjani Salmon [writer-star of BBC Three’s Dreaming Whilst Black] and he said, ‘I can’t believe you’ve done it!’”

Launched on BBC Three in 2024, Boarders is a culture-clash comedy-drama about five underprivileged Black sixth-formers on a scholarship to a very posh, very white, private boarding school. It’s a show with a big heart – and a message that’s no less powerful for being delivered with a lightness of touch.

Lord Sugar reveals The Apprentice future and why the UK won't get a hungry entrepreneurial culture: "Too late, mate"

fed.brid.gy/r/https://www.radi

This article first appeared in Radio Times magazine.

The Apprentice is currently well into its 20th series, fronted, as ever, by the self-made multimillionaire, life peer, author and sometime political adviser, Alan Sugar.

But after two decades of firing contestants who fail to meet his exacting standards, is the 78-year-old’s faith in young British entrepreneurs still intact? Or has he given up on a generation drawn by the lure of celebrity rather than his own ethos of hard work?

The Apprentice is now in its 20th series – would you like to reach a quarter century?

It’s not down to me but we have agreed another three years. I guess there’ll come a time when either I’m a bit knackered or viewers are phoning in and complaining that I’m like Joe Biden and losing the plot. The BBC will spend a few grand on some market research people and ask, “Should we get rid of Lord Sugar or what?” But, at the moment, I love doing it because it’s really about starting a business from scratch with young people.

Have business practices changed since The Apprentice began in 2005?

Yes, because of technology and because of the internet. When people create businesses now, rather than having a bricks-and- mortar shop or warehouse, they are created on the web. I like to have a physical product. Let’s make something!

So why does The Apprentice remain relevant?
<
