With today being , thought I'd show off the double-sided, vertical chessboard I made.

We've got it in a old shop window. Passersby can text a move for Black through for the 10 am move or the 4pm move.

Adjustments? Person on the inside is looking/moving through Venetian blind slats. And their board is reversed - white corner square is on the opposite side to usual.

An 8 by 8 grid of square cells, looking like small boxes, in a large, 800mm high vertical chessboard. Each cell is open to the front and back. The front of the board is behind a shop window.
Each cell has its walls painted either black or white.
Grid reference characters are around the frame of the grid, 1 through 8 on the horizontals, and a through h on the verticals. Chess pieces sit on the floors of their cells.

The Hessisches Landesmuseum #Kassel (GER) owns a couple of #chess sets from the legacy of the landgraves of Hessen-Kassel. The one shown here is made in silver by Nikolaus Ostertag around 1700. Pieces symbolize Romans vs. Africans. Back in 2019 I counted 7 sets in the permanent #exhibition – and according to Antonius van der Linde there are more in the #museum stockrooms. 📷 my own. #WorldChessDay #InternationalChessDay2023 #InternationalChessday #ChessHistory #GamesHistory #HistoryOfGames #Schachgeschichte
