Born on this day in 1901, Max Euwe became the fifth World Chess Champion after his historic victory over Alexander Alekhine in 1935. Celebrated for his logical playing style and deep opening knowledge, Euwe also made lasting contributions to chess theory.

A prolific author, he wrote over 70 chess books — more than any other World Champion in history!

Beyond the board, Euwe played a pivotal role in shaping modern chess as FIDE President from 1970 to 1978. His leadership and vision continue to influence the game today.
