We often talk about , but this focuses on technologies. We need to focus on people. Cities don’t exist in isolation. We need to take a perspective. is coming.

It’s true … privacy is dead. With @czds and as always thinking about how privacy, transparency, security and convenience apply to especially causal digital twins

A picture taken from inside through a glass door. Standing on a gray deck is a deer — a young buck who has dropped its antlers. The deer is turning away from looking inside the door. There are brown wood railings to either side of the deer, and to the side of unseen steps into the backyard. To the left of the deer on the deck is another deer, peering through the lower part of railings. Past the deer are bird feeders, trees and bushes. The day is grey and rainy, bent tree limbs are evocative of heavy winds.

While @czds and I were preheating the oven and shaping the bread [Moon’n’Stars] pictured below, our watches buzzed with a notice from the range that there was a problem. The screen on the range showed an error code. Second try passed. Smart Diagnostics showed that the “heater” failed but all else, including “etc” passed. not even much of a monitoring let alone causal digital twin

Two loaves of browned bread, shaped as a crescent moon, and shattered with white sesame seeds, some char near each end. The open areas of the crescent face each other. The loaves rest in a grey cooking rack set atop a beige butcher block cutting board. There are red mahogany cabinets in the background.

A neighbor asked us to take a video of their roof using [ @czds ] Clarise’s drone, Ronzi. The deer were quite interested. I think they were hoping for a food delivery.

An aerial shot from a small drone. In the foreground are tall grasses to the left and right, with a black gravel driveway between the grasses. The grass gives way too brown sand on the left and the lower part of a blue house can be seen. Standing in front of the house are five deer, looking up at the drone. Slightly to the right of center the black gravel driveway stops at a white concrete driveway, with a sidewalk going to the left and the parallel to the driveway. Standing in the driveway are two figures, one female, one male, both wearing royal blue coats. They look tiny from the drone’s perspective and you cannot see details of their faces. Both have black hair, though the male is balding. A four-point cane is in front of the female. Behind them is a white garage door and more blue of the house.

Indeed, and interestingly, in speaking to practicing and research physicians, they are still determining how to interpret these near continuous streams of data that they have never had before

A copied toot from @CZDS@mastodon.social linking to an article from MedicalExpress.com with the headline: Digital Twins could lead to more proactive, personalized medicine, researchers say” and a summary of “What if you had a twin who doctors could work with to predict your future health care needs or how a particular virus might affect you? Obviously we can’t experiment on a real clone of ourselves, but we can research different scenarios with a digital twin.

All of these considerations, privacy, transparency, security and convenience, and “publicly” as Leonard’s original point highlighted, and “confidentiality” as another commenter mentioned, must be in the architecture, specifications and architectural framework, implemented in the design, and assured through quality testing.

Privacy, transparency, security and convenience must also be understood in the cultural, regulatory, economic, political and environmental regime in which the individuals, things and organizations exist. We must also recognize that everyone is an individual, not a demographic. Once, it was pointed out that the person we were talking with and their spouse had very similar backgrounds but very different views.

Security is about protecting both the data and the choices made at all stages of collection, transport, storage/erasures and use of any data. Convenience is overarching; it must be convenient for an individual or thing to make those choices, to discover those goals, and to understand the protections.

Privacy is about choice: the person or thing generating the data must be able to choose what and how those data are used and when — this might change over time. Transparency is about the organization, platform, app or thing providing an honest and open view into their goals for any data that might be collected.

In our technical strategy advisories, we look at privacy, transparency, security and convenience. The first challenge is convincing people that this isn’t an optimization problem; you don’t trade one for another.

An excellent article by Lyndsay Wise: “On a high level, data mesh is about connecting and enabling data management across distributed systems”

The conclusions help bring concepts into the picture more clearly.
