A ceasefire in the Irish War of Independence began on 11 July 1921. The post-ceasefire talks led to the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty on 6 December 1921. This ended British rule in most of Ireland and, after a ten-month transitional period overseen by a provisional government, the Irish Free State was created as a self-governing Dominion on 6 December 1922.

Oh, wow, this is nuts.
In 1999, #NorthernIreland secretaries were issues documents on how to correctly refer to #Ireland and #Britain. The article describes it as being written for #PeterMendelson, but it sounds like a standard document issues to all secretaries.
Apparently as late as 1999, #NI Secretaries had to be specifically advised not to refer to the #RepublicOfIreland as the #IrishFreeState, a political entity that had not existed since 1937.

Today in Labor History December 29, 1937: The Irish Free State adopted a new constitution making it the modern independent Republic of Ireland. The Irish Free State was created on December 6, 1922 under the Anglo-Irish Treaty after the Irish War of Independence. It was a nominally autonomous part of the British Commonwealth. However, its representatives still had to swear an oath to the king of England. Consequently, many of its elected leaders never took their seats in office.

When people ask when was the Irish state founded, I usually respond "it's complicated".
For example: could claim the signing of the 1921 Anglo-Irish treaty which ended the War of Independence. That immediately split the country triggering civil war. During the civil war, #100YearsAgo the Constitution came into effect on 1922-12-06.
Then the civil war ended in 1923. The Irish Free State ended with a new constitution in 1937 when we officially became #Ireland
